Thread: Buying a GPU; have some questions

Question Buying a GPU; have some questions

    I'm planning to buy a R9 280/280x (if not available then R9 285). My current specs are - i5 3470 cpu, R9 270 gpu, 8GB Ram and a Coolermaster GX550w psu. Now my questions are -

    1. Is it worth getting a R9 280/280x/285 considering the performance or I should stick with my current gpu? I can't buy any high-end gpu which costs more than 25k.

    2. IF it's worth upgrading, do any of the mentioned gpus require greater power supply or my current psu is sufficient?

is your max budget 25k after selling 270? coz you can sell 270 for 10-12k

cm gx is an entry level psu, i wont recommend an entry level psu for 280x...

but 285/380 is much more power efficient than 280x so cm gx wont be terrible for that. you can change psu later.

from 270 to 285 will be worthy upgrade...15-20%, but not worthy enough coz you wont be playing all games at ultra 1080p... though you can play many games ulta high.

if you can increase budget to 31k from 25k i would recommend getting 970 because it will a worthy upgrade. your framerate will be doubleD. ~100% PERFORMANCE BOOST :V

so get 970, you are gonna thank me later

also... 390 is better than 3.5gb 970 but its 32k and your power supply...

    - - - Updated - - -

btw... no matter what gpu you buy change your psu later a personal suggestion

Upgrading to 280X might be a worthy one, but not 280/285. But the thing is you'll probably need a better PSU to run that card. An alternative maybe to get the 380 or 960 4 GB, but I'll not suggest upgrading yet if you expect a huge boost.

If you really want to be future proof, then wait a bit longer, try to get the GTX 970 (around 30K) and your performance will have a huge boost compared to a 280X/380, and you might not need to change the PSU for some more time. But as @furiousTaher suggested, you should upgrade your PSU when you can.

ALSO rumor has it that 380X might be announced soon, keep a look out for that

Yap. That's exactly what I'm planning. My budget should reach 25k AFTER I sell my gpu, but if I need to upgrade my psu, then I guess I'm gonna have to postpone . Any psu suggestion?

It's not worth upgrading from a 270 to a 280, better save up your money and buy a 390 or 970 at a discounted price next year.

    gigabyte pulse 650w is 6k i think.... or seasonic 520w at 7k

for 960 and 970 you dont need to upgrade psu... for 285/380 you actually dont need, but i suggest upgrading psu later... 280x is no no. and 280x is market out

    btw 285=380.

upgrading to 280 wont be worth at all, but 285/380 or 280x will be worth it... but here is the calculation-

you are probably selling 270 for ~10~12k
    you are adding ~12k for 380 4gb at 22k
20% performance boost on average... (15-25%)
can play many games ultra but not all games.
still cant play fc4... or gta 5 full ultra. good fps 1080p
not the best price performance ratio atm. but 2nd best price/perf ratio.

    add only 9k more... ~31k.

    gtx 970 3.5gb
every game at ultra 1080p high fps.
    'future proof'
100% performance increase from 270. frame rate gets doubled.
best price/performance ratio in the history of graphics cards.

    Do your math

PS: for 1080p 970 is enough for now... but not for 1440p.... also in future for 1080p 970gtx can show 'fps spike' because of 3.5gb ram.

please note that if you are running tons of graphical mods in skyrim or minecraft 970 can show problems when you might see your amd friend dancing in awesomeness with his 290/390

PS2: please check guru3d hardocp and pcper for benchmark. you get the idea

    285=380.

to op: if you can buy 970 do it. forget what i said about psu... for now

    - - - Updated - - -

also, if you are buying 960... dont bother with 2gb vs 4gb vram... but if you buying 380 then 4gb vram is definitely better.

I KNOW 380 is 285 refresh, but I wanted to recommend the newer one due to the 300 series's lower heat output, lower power consumption and here is my mistake, I thought the all GPU on the 200 series didn't support DX12 (up to 12_0), but turns out I was wrong. But right now it's just better to go with the 300 series, the Sapphire 285 is around 20k, the GIGABYTE 380 is 21.8k.

is there any heat difference, power consumption difference between non-reference 285 and 380? -_- (non reference same manufacture same brand)

that 285 is 2gb while gigabyte 380 is 4gb... if both were 2gb i would say get 285 to save bucks

yup just wait till 970 gets a price cut, very good price/performance ratio and much lower TDP and less heat than others in the price range.

The 380 is 5-6 degrees lower than 285 (BOTH = NON-Reference. ASUS STRIX. Info provided by Guru3D). So it's pretty good, given that price difference isn't that much, plus lower power consumption, slightly better performance, 4 GB VRAM (on 256-bit bus, unlike 960).

lets not start another amd vs nvidia war shall we

3.5gb 970 sometimes show 'sudden fps drop' problem in 1440p, where 290 won't. but in 1080p it doesnt... but maybe in future it will, coz games gonna be more vram hungry in future. also, afaik if you are using some of hundred thousands of graphical mods in skyrim or minecraft 970 might show little to severe problems where 290 will shine.

having said that.. he has an entry level psu... so unless he gets the budget to upgrade psu, he should get 970

3.5gb 970 sometimes show 'sudden fps drop' problem in 1440p, where 290 won't. but in 1080p it doesnt... but maybe in future it will, coz games gonna be more vram hungry in future. also, afaik if you are using some of hundred thousands of graphical mods in skyrim or minecraft 970 might show little to severe problems where 290 will shine.

having said that.. he has an entry level psu... so unless he gets the budget to upgrade psu, he should get 970
970 isn't meant for a 1440p though, 980 is. and since i don't have any gpu right now im using a borrowed 970 and i can play skyrim with all my mods from STEP + a few more.

You put too much emphasis on future proofing.

When games do get VRAM hungry enough to actually choke current-gen cards, who in their right mind will max out settings with only a 290?

    me?

isnt that what we heard about 3gb vram? 3gb vram will forever be enough for 1080p, now guess what, its not.

well, if you can then why not? last time i checked 290 can still max out... except for ac unity or arma 3.... or..... no other game coming in mind right now. witcher 3 can be played with 290 ulra high... with nvidia gimmicks turned off, though fps wont be that satisfactory

290 is still best price/performance gpu in history of gaming, specially the powercolor 290 was available at 250$ for a while. which is bang for a buck.

pc gaming will move on, developers don't optimize 'ultra settings' that much so age of 3.5gb might come to an end soon? though i see open world games coming... ubi has the division(which is gonna get downgrade), ghost recon wildlands. mirrors edge. just cause3. no mans sky. star citizen. triad wars. and of course AC.

off topic : great time for open world gaming since 2014 june we got watch doge, gta 5 pc, witcher 3, batman, fc4, elder scrolls. so this means we are going to see ~15 open world game in april 2014- late 2016 period(30 months). wow

    So it's like this :

In the past RPGs were mainstream, last generation it was FPS, and now is the Open World era.
