Default Re: Are you an Intel or AMD fan?

not a fan of either, whatever gives the most bang for the buck, but to choose one, it will have to be AMD

AMD does have some good options when buying a low, and low-mid end computer. and many people forget that AMD, while being 10 times smaller than Intel, has released processors which have been far, far better than intel in the past (ie. athlon 64 X2, which simply crushed the P4D). That itself is a feat which is hard to accomplish, them being that much smaller

and many people also dont know or forget intel's bad business practices..one example would be when they gave some computer manufacturers sums of money, and selling processors below market price to prevent them from using AMD processors in the days when the Athlon 64 was superior. why would they have to revert to shameless business practices when they are so much larger and profitable as a company? :o

but that doesnt mean i wont buy/recommend their processors nowadays. they have been superior on the performance front for quite sometime, and i wholeheartedly recommend buying their processors. however the celerons are usually slower than the Athlon 64 X2's, so when buying a lower end computer, keep that in mind

IF AMD was in position of Intel and had the money/luxury, AMD would have done the same. they are there to make money like everybody else.

    maybe, and maybe not

IBM is around three times larger and much more profitable compared to intel. However, they have a clean track record, even though they have stiff competition in the server space. money can be made without being filed for lawsuits in many countries

again, im not bashing intel, just stating the facts. i do think they have fantastic reources, marketing and technology. its just that you DO need to give credit to AMD, them being 10 times smaller than intel but still outperforming intel for years and years in the past

well, while being 10 times smaller has its disadvantage, it also brings a lot of advantages that a big company like Intel can never achieve just because of their size.
also, AMD uses some licensed stuffs from Intel = AMD never had to research those from scratch.

    anyways,

Now that Intel is back on track, AMD has to show something GREAT to beat Intel.

What advantages does AMD have being much smaller?

I have talked to some people who worked on developing the phenom in the past, and the problem was there were many different ideas for the design (especially the cache hierarchy) from their research facilities, and molding the best parts of all the designs into one was the problem. These problems usually occur with larger companies, since this particular problem is alleviated along with more miscommunication in larger companies like intel, but mismanagement caused it in this case with AMD. So in this case, intel doesnt really suffer from being larger since they are very well managed..

other than that, i see no other advantages being a much smaller company, since much, much less money can be spent on R & D

and if you say AMD only did good in the A64 days since intel screwed with the P4, what would you say when the original athlon was the first to reach 1ghz, and was around 30% faster than the P3 available back in those days? credit isnt usually given to AMD for their past deeds, most people dont even know what happened in the past and think intel was the best all along...

i do agree about them not having to research for many technologies (SSE, etc) which helps them save time and focus more. but then again, Intel's R&D excees theirs by more than ten fold anyway

and IBM helping nazis is different. they werent directly affecting their competitors but were being evil indeed. But very, very few companies actually have a record of directly getting caught trying to sabotage their competitors, and when it does happen, its just plain and simply wrong

again, intel is the best x86 microprocessor manufacturer now, theres no doubt. but there are things that AMD never gets credited for, i still remember trying to convince people in the past that the athlon 64 X2 ate the Pentium 4 D for lunch, but still it took quite some time for them to grasp the fact since they were blinded by intel's marketing(which they really do have to be credited for though )

raw power e impossible. because Core i7 is going to be "core 2 incident" all over again.
they (AMD) can only hope for a price performance ratio fight.

    Well said Mazhar!
Support AMD for the same reason.

I will buy the better performing processor for the same price & If their performace is almost equal I will choose AMD.
Intel dominates the mid & high ends... Hands Down!

Giddy can be traced back to the same Germanic root *gud– that has given us the word God
