Report: Sony Pictures Closing in on Assassinís Creed Movie Deal That Could Make Gamers Happy

Sony Pictures is close to signing a deal with Ubisoft to turn period-piece adventure gameAssassin's Creed into a movie, Varietyreports. More importantly, it sounds like the deal could actually result in a movie you'd want to watch.

The deal comes after a reported bidding war between several studios including Sony and Universal. Last summer Ubisoft launched Ubisoft Motion Pictures as part of a move to expand beyond gaming and become a transmedia company.

In theory, the new arm of Ubisoft would keep a close eye on the production of the movie to make sure it doesn't become, well, almost every other video game turned into movie: Bad.Variety reports that this ability to maintain creative control over the film was a key factor in the negotiations, which I'll take to be a very good sign.

Apparently Sony is as interested in Assassin's Creed as most of you are. Variety reports that they don't want to just make it into a movie, but rather bet on it become a major release with some future in the theater.

Earlier this year, Ubisoft Toronto managing director Jade Raymond talked about the importance of the Assassin's Creed brand to Ubisoft. The game was quickly identified as a creative concept that has the ability to transcend one medium and become, as Raymond put it, a "widely shared pass-time."

    Sony breeds 'Creed'

    Studio eyes new franchise

Sony Pictures has put a target on Ubisoft's "Assassin's Creed," closing in on a deal to develop a film franchise based on the popular videogame series.Studio is in final negotiations to adapt and distribute the bigscreen version of the historical actioner, landing the film rights in a bidding war after Ubisoft started shopping the property around Hollywood over the last several months. Studios, including Universal, also were vying for the project.

Deal comes after the French gamemaker launched Ubisoft Motion Pictures, at its Paris headquarters in May, as a shingle to seek out entertainment partners to turn its titles into films and TV shows. Jean-Julien Baronnet, former CEO of Luc Besson's EuropaCorp, heads the venture.

Through the division, Ubisoft wants to maintain more creative control over the development of its games for other platforms rather than broker traditional one-off licensing deals with studios, something that proved key during the bidding process with Sony.

The company views adaptations as a way to turn its games into larger brands that will get the titles in front of more consumers while creating lucrative new revenue sources for the company. One of its first projects is an animated TV series based on the "Raving Rabbids" franchise that will air on Nickelodeon.

The "Assassin's Creed" deal also comes as Sony increasingly is eyeing the videogame space as a potential source for future franchises. It also has an adaptation of Naughty Dog's "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" and "InFamous" in development with Arad Prods. Titles are exclusive to Sony's PlayStation division.
The first "Assassin's Creed" game bowed in 2007, with a fourth installment, "Assassin's Creed: Revelations," set to hit store shelves Nov. 15.

Property, developed by Ubisoft Montreal, revolves around a bartender named Desmond Miles who is captured by a secret corporation called Abstergo Industries and forced to go back in time to various historical periods like the Renaissance and Crusades to relieve the memories of his ancestors -- all assassins -- in order to recover ancient artifacts. New game is set in 16th century Constantinople.More than 30 million copies of the games have been sold worldwide.

Because "Assassin's Creed" has been one of Ubisoft's higher-profile titles, with its iconic hooded hero and lavish cinematic sequences that unfold in between gameplay, the company is looking to turn it into a major tentpole at megaplexes, which would mean Sony would likely co-produce and co-finance the production instead of Ubisoft footing the entire bill.

In August, Ubisoft chief Yves Guillemot, at the Gamescom confab in Cologne, Germany, said that he wants bigscreen versions of "Assassin's Creed," "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell" and "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon."
Ubisoft's "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" already was adapted by Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer, earning a disappointing $335 million worldwide, with just $91 million of that in the U.S. last year.

Although sources close to the talks confirmed the deal was moving forward between Sony and Ubisoft, the gamemaker said it had "no specific news to share at this time," according to a spokeswoman. Sony declined to comment.
"As we've stated before, Ubisoft is actively looking for film opportunities for our top brands," the Ubisoft spokeswoman said. "There is high interest from top Hollywood studios to collaborate on these brands."

16 Assassin's Creed movie domains registered

Seemingly confirms Ubisoft deal with Sony Pictures

The Assassin's Creed movie is a go it would seem, as Sony has been spotted registering domains for the project.

No fewer than 16 domain names were apparently registered by Sony on October 20 (observed Fusible, via Kotaku), seemingly indicating the reportedly in-talks project is good to go.

It was reported last week that Ubisoft was 'nearing a deal' with Sony Pictures to bring the Assassin's Creed franchise to the big screen.

While a Ubisoft rep declined to confirm the talks, they did say: "As we've stated before, Ubisoft is actively looking for film opportunities for our top brands," adding, "There is high interest from top Hollywood studios to collaborate on these brands."

Assassin's Creed film deal gives Ubisoft 'unheard of' control - Report

Hollywood insider predicts publisher's influence on adaptation of popular stealth action franchise will keep it from ever being made.

When Ubisoft announced an Assassin's Creed movie, the publisher touted its creative control in the project. While that may have given fans of the series hope for a positive outcome, at least one Hollywood insider is predicting that the publisher's level of control will keep the film from ever being made.

New York Magazine entertainment blog Vulturereports that the terms of Ubisoft and Sony's Assassin's Creed film deal could spell doom for the adaptation. An unnamed Hollywood agent told Vulture, "The whole Ubisoft/Sony deal is a waste of ink, paper and time. The level of control Sony gave up means, effectively, that Assassin's Creed will never--and I mean never--get made."

The deal in question is reported to grant the publisher "unheard of" control over many aspects of the adaptation, including final say on budget, principal cast, script, and release date--control said to be impossible for even Steven Spielberg to land. With Ubisoft's terms seen as demanding for even a property with a large built-in audience, Warner Bros., Universal, and Dreamworks reportedly ended up passing on the project.
On the surface, having a property's creator retain control over every aspect of a film adaptation may seem like a good thing. However, an unidentified studio head reportedly feels different, telling the magazine, "The only way to make sure it's a bad movie is to undervalue what movie studios do."

Ubisoft previously partnered with Disney for last year's Prince of Persia film, with a story adapted for the screen by series creator Jordan Mechner. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was seen as unsuccessful, which Ubisoft reportedly felt was due to its lack of control over the project.
The Halo film met its demise under similar circumstances, according to Vulture. Microsoft required a large chunk of the theatrical gross for the film, and when Peter Jackson and others were brought on board insisting on their own share of the proceeds, Fox and Universal balked. An industry insider said that the Assassin's Creed deal isn't identical to the failed Microsoft mega-franchise adaptation, since Ubisoft is footing the bill for a large part of the film's development.

Yep this is why business between games and movies are never meant to be mixed. The gaming studio is mostly at fault here thanks to their "hold most of the gross" idea i mean come on the film is getting a nice reputation plus a movie of halo!!!Thanks a lot Fox and Universal and mostly microsoft you guys can eat dirt from the bottom of the earth's crust

As for Sony well here i am not hoping the film comes to production, sure they got talents but well i also second what the agent said.

    Wink Assassin'S CreeD: The Movie

Sony signed with Ubisoft Motion Pictures to distribute the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ movie and now we’re finding out the details behind the deal and what made other studios drop out.

Growing video game developer and publisher Ubisoft formed its own film production house back in May. Titled Ubisoft Motion Pictures, the studio’s primary goal is to get to work on the beginnings of three potential film franchises based on their core video game series: Assassin’s Creed, Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell, the latter two of which spawned from Tom Clancy novels.
Assassin’s Creed is the hottest property Ubisoft is running with at the moment, with its fourth major release in four years occurring in under two weeks. Seeing the buzz, the sales numbers and potential of the stories and cinematic nature of the games, several movie studios vied for the chance to work with Ubisoft and distribute the film adaptation, but Sony won in the end. According to the heads of competing studios, perhaps they didn’t really win…

According to Vulture, the deal Sony signed with Ubisoft is unlike any other in that it grants Ubisoft Motion Pictures nearly full creative control as well as approval over the script, casting decisions, budget and release date. Like we’re beginning to see with a lot of major video game franchises, the creators are rightfully worried of filmmakers ruining their brand and this is why we’re seeing so much hesitation and uncertainty on films including Call of Duty, Gears of War, Grand Theft Auto, Halo, Metal Gear Solid and Uncharted.
One of Vulture’s insiders describes the deal as something not even Spielberg could get land as a director and Spielberg’s DreamWorks was one of the first studios to pass on Assassin’s Creed movie. Spielberg isn’t shooting down the movie as many are over-dramatizing; DreamWorks is avoiding the restrictive situation that comes with it. When it comes to licensed properties there’s a very tough balance between the director’s creative control, the creator trying to protect their own work and the studio whose primary goal is to maximize the revenue by making the film as accessible and wide-reaching as possible.
According to Vulture’s multiple studio sources, there’s a long of angst about the existence of such a deal where the movie studio has what amounts to be little creative control over the project. This ended up being what took Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures out of the running.
“It’s [Ubisoft’s] billion-dollar brand, so I get that they’re protective… But they’re not moviemakers, and the only way to make sure it’s a bad movie is to undervalue what movie studios do — and this is a deal that totally undervalues what movie studios do.”
By “what movie studios do,” said studio exec must be referring to the likes of Hitman, Prince of Persia, Max Payne and Wing Commander. Clearly, they got the right idea when it comes to managing and running with video game projects. Seeing as how in reality nearly all video game movies suck – even the ones with massive budgets – perhaps it’s best to try something different with Assassin’s Creed. The more control Ubisoft has might just be for the best.

The protagonists of the Assassin's Creed games

Says one studio chief who of course, didn’t get the Assassin’s Creed deal for his studio:
“They want to be able to pull the plug on the whole movie’s development if they decide to. It’s ridiculous.”
No, the Doom adaptation was ridiculous. Someone needed to the pull the plug on that.
This isn’t as extreme as some are making it sound since Ubisoft is actually going to be financing a heavy portion of the project and this is why Sony was satisfied with the deal. Ubisoft is simply fearful of what a movie studio would do with Assassin’s Creed if they weren’t fully involved and who can blame them after what Disney did with Prince of Persia and a $200 million production budget.
There’s actually a deep and complex story behind the Assassin’s Creed games with a wide variety of wonderful characters. The potential for a long-term film franchise and merchandising is limitless but it all comes down to it being made right. That’s what Ubisoft is aiming to do and good for them – perhaps it can be the movie to turn the tide for the genre and bring the quality that some of these major video game franchises deserve on the silver screen.
What the other studio execs are really worried about is this deal actually working out and the movie not only hitting it big at the box office, but among critics. What happens with the industry and deals with video game publishers going forward? Uh oh. Let’s just hope Sony and Ubisoft can work together on this one and get the right people involved.
For an idea of the visual style Assassin’s Creed can offer, you must watch the Assassin’s Creed Revelations E3 2011 trailer at our sister site, Game Rant. Also check out episode 11 of the Screen Rant Underground podcast where we also discuss the Assassin’s Creed film.
