Lightbulb Dark Souls on PC? Ausgamers Ask NamcoBandai if it's Possible

In a lengthy interview with Dark Souls producers, Kei Hirono and Daisuke Uchiyama, from NamcoBandai, we asked that burning question we know a lot of our core community members would ask: Is there any chance we could see the game arrive on PC?

"It’s a tough question," came the producer response. "We don’t have a definite answer for you right now, but one of the steps we took from being a partner with From Software was we were able to create an Xbox 360 as well as a PS3 game to increase the fanbase. Something like the PC is always in our minds, but there’s no definitive answer right now."

    Full Interview From Ausgamers:

While the game is currently enjoying the review rounds, AusGamers had a chance to catch up with Dark Souls producers, Kei Hirono and Daisuke Uchiyama, from NamcoBandai Games to get a better understanding of the hardcore development workings of this dark fantasy title from From Software.

AusGamers: We’ll start with the complexity of the game and its difficulty -- which seems to be a major staple for it, but I think Dark Souls probably has a bit more interest behind it; from a lot of people that never played Demon’s Souls. So internally, what’s the philosophy going forward with maintaining that hardcore difficulty while having an entry level for new people?

NamcoBandai: In terms of the difficulty, for new people who have not played Demon’s Souls before there’s no intent to create an easy mode or very easy mode and there’s no intent to offer downloadable content that would be beneficial to players.

There’s no intent on making the game easier for beginners and harder for experienced players, that’s not the concept. We’ve spent a lot of time in terms of the balancing and tweaking of the game to maintain a difficulty level. With that being said -- as you mentioned -- a lot of the new players that have not played Demon’s Souls still seem to be attracted to Dark Souls as well.

That’s been a bit of a surprise to us, but it’s been expected to a certain extent. We feel that hardcore gamers are looking for a game like Dark Souls, with the challenge that it provides.

AusGamers: Do you feel that there’s a shift in the videogame industry now towards more hardcore games because of the saturation of casual gaming and more motion control games. Hardcore gamers seem to be really screaming out for more complex games and I’m wondering if -- from a development perspective -- do you see that shift happening on a broad scale?

NamcoBandai: In saying that games these days are becoming easier or more accessible -- games like Call of Duty or Metal Gear Solid-- those games aren’t really easy; they’ve maintained a certain amount of difficulty. But at the same time, we think that what hardcore gamers are more looking for are games that are based on a strategic way of thinking -- the actions that those players carry out and the affect that those actions will have in the game.

From that perspective, a game like Dark Souls, we think really satisfies that. In terms of all the actions that are carried out in the game are a result of the user’s choices. So a game like Wizardry where you have to draw your own maps is something that we’re thinking about. The more hardcore you get, the more of that kind of thing you want in a game.

AusGamers: This is sort of a two-part question: where you guys ever expecting Demon’s Souls to be as critically well-received as it was and embraced by such a hardcore community and how much has the community fed the direction for Dark Souls?

NamcoBandai: In terms of so-called success for Demon’s Souls, for Demon’s Souls, because we’re Namco and we hadn’t had a partnership with From Software when they released Demon’s Souls, it’s kind of hard to say on behalf of them. But speaking with the dev team, what they have said was that they feel the results that came out of Demon’s Souls was a result of the players accepting the game and really diving deep into the core of the game design, which was what the dev team wanted. That sort of grew the fanbase and drove sales of the game so we’re obviously very thankful for that and to a certain extent it was a surprise to them.

As to the second part of the question: what kind of affect the feedback has to the direction of Dark Souls? To be completely honest, it doesn’t really. We do take in any feedback that we get from players -- all comments are well-taken. But at the same time, when we did create Dark Souls, we created what do best, what we wanted to create and what we wanted to give to the players. So we didn’t really let the player comments really influence our decision making process in any other way.

We get comments from all over and when we have our base when we’re tuning the game, we do take comments into account to a certain extent. But again, our goal is not to make a game that the players are asking for. Our goal is to deliver what we feel is our best game and hopefully the players will be accepting to that game, as it was with Demon's Souls.

AusGamers: Can we talk about the development process coming off Demon’s Souls and moving into Dark Souls, what was the internal goal for Dark Souls? In terms of differentiation, new additions and stuff they didn’t think worked with Demon’s Souls?

And how did the technology adapt? Was any of the technology for Demon’s Souls able to be used for this game or was it a completely fresh start?

NamcoBandai: In terms of how the team transferred from Demon’s Souls to Dark Souls, that was all taken care of within From Software -- the same team was largely carried over from Demon’s Souls to Dark Souls. But in terms of the technology design, the main world concept was carried over to a certain extent, but we were a little inefficient, in that when we created Dark Souls we basically built from the bottom up with Dark Souls.

But it worked out for us, because it didn’t seem like Demon’s Souls had just been patched up and added on to, we’ve been able to create something brand new and we think that the experience with Dark Souls will be similar but different enough for them to understand that it’s a different game created by the same developers.

AusGamers: Are there any external influences that help drive the visual style of the game? Because there’s a lot of dark high-fantasy creepiness in there and a lot of the designs are really unique.

NamcoBandai: It’s a difficult question for us to answer. Everything is all set in the mind of Mr Miyazaki who’s the director of the game, but based on a lot of discussions we have found out that much of his inspiration has come from a game-book called sorcery. He has grown up always liking these dark fantasy kind of worlds, so it’s all come from inside his head.

We’ve heard stories about what the game is all about and what the story is all about, but his imagination is something very special. It’s not something that’s not shared commonly among all the designers, it has strictly come from within him and he’s the main one that drives the visual direction as well as what the world involves.

AusGamers: Finally, is there any chance that the game might make it to PC?

NamcoBandai: It’s a tough question. We don’t have a definite answer for you right now, but one of the steps we took from being a partner with From Software was we were able to create an Xbox 360 as well as a PS3 game to increase the fanbase. Something like the PC is always in our minds, but there’s no definitive answer right now.

First we want to wait for the street-date, see how well it does, then think forward after that.

AusGamers: Ok, thank you very much.

    NamcoBandai: Thank you. Cool questions.
