Default Buying a new laptop. Need advice

    Updated st00f:

    Bought an Asus G50V-A1! w00t!!!

    Previous post:

Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong sub-forum.

So... I'm buying a new laptop and I'm pretty much clueless as to what to get. Actually, I do have some idea from past experiences, but I still need some advice. This is a laptop for school use by the way so I'm not really looking for anything that "wow".

Now, the only things that concern me are...
    - the price; I do not want to exceed 2000$, wanna stick around 1500$
    - battery life; anything decent... 3 hours +
    - decent hard drive; 250 GB +
    - configuration good enough for FIFA; that's probably the only game I'm gonna play on it.
    - life span; make sure it does not slow down or DIE before atleast 2 years... keeping in mind that I wont be using the laptop that roughly, only for school work, and I'll only have music and one or 2 games on it, nothing more.

The laptop will most probably be bought be Canada somewhere around half a month to a months time, so keeping my "needs" in mind which laptop brand + model would you guys recommend?

EDIT: Please don't just recommend a certain brand, but specific models as well.

I'l give the greatest advice that no one else will, (at least here) - WWW.CNET.COM, yes, the mother-site of www.download.com. Go check all the reviews and videos. Decide for yourself, don't just let random forumers make up your mind.

    ... looking forward to that.

I would just like to state my main reason as to why I posted this thread. I have been a laptop user for the past 3/4 years. Laptops are required by our school, therefore I not only have my own experiences with laptops, but I have a rough idea of at least 50 other people (those are only the one in my grade) to even around 180-ish people (that's pretty much all the four grade levels that require laptops) and their good/bad experiences.

As far as I have seen, online reviews are really good, but what they lack is the "reliability factors" ... at least that's what I would say from my experiences. Basically what that means is that if I had a knowledge of a large amount of people using a certain brand and even model of laptop, and lets a large amount of those users suffered a common problem. Such examples would be like...

    1. HP Laptops, apart from maybe the COMPAQ models, almost every single HP users that I have known, have had MAJOR problems, within a year's to months' time. This included crashes, bad CD drives, to a very common case of laptops slowing down within a few weeks time and the "blue screen thing"... VERY COMMON. No matter how much someone convinces me, I will never ever buy an HP laptop... I just can't take the risk.

    2. Acer laptops, that includes me a few other classmates who use the 3/4 year older models, and every single one of us have experienced heating problems. But I must say everybody whom I have seen use the newer models, such as the Gemstone ones have very good experiences and have absolutely no complaints. This alonside having theAcer dealership in BD, gives me a good reason to purchase an Acer laptop.

    3. VAIO. People say; even some users that I have met, that VAIO's have very bad cooling systems, and running them for long hours will cause problems. Not a single person that I know of in my school has probably used a VAIO longer than a year... because they knew of the risks, other than a few who's laptops slowed down a lot.

I have some knowledge to share, but I think you guys probably know a lot more than me, and anyone's opinion on any exerperiences that they may have with laptops would be greatly appreciated.
