Default Questions regarding PSU requirement for specific GPU

I currently use a Delta 550W PSU with my core 2 quad q9400, 4870 1gb, x-fi titanium, 2 500gb hdd & a DVD writer. Also I have 5 120mm fans running with it & without any problems. But I was just thinking of upgrading to a new GPU at the end of this year, it might be a gtx 570 or 580.

So my question is, will my Delta 550W be able to pull a GTX 570?

Asking the question because, I have seen the geforce website saying that minimum PSU wattage is 550W for 570. So if my delta can pull it off, then I would not go for a new PSU, as my delta one is still new & has warranty. But if I have to get a PSU, now will be the time, so gotta know fast.

Also, can anyone tell me, how good is the Corsair TX650W PSU? I found someone selling via Arif vai, which was brought from abroad, 1 yr used with a regular office PC & according to them, looks like new, selling at 6k. Can anyone tell me if it would be safe to take that PSU? longevity & stability to be considered, remembering I have an UPS running well. Asking this because, if it is good enough, I may take it, which will give me the option to think for a GTX 580.

    Thanks

I think you should get something better than your current one if you want to buy a GTX570. And which version is the TX650?

Not bad, should be able to handle a 580. But would have been better if you could find TX650 v2.

Bhaiya I suggest a better PSU than the one you are currently using right now. A 550W is a bare minimum for a GTX580, though yours should handle without a problem. About the Corsair TX650, it's a solid unit, go for it even if you aren't getting a new GPU in the near future. Good PSU's are hard to come by in BD, so this is a really good opportunity. Or you could save up & get a brand new 750W from outside.

Btw, what is the amp rating in the 12V rails ?

Can't afford more than 6k now I think. Do you think it would be a good buy considering it has no warranty & is one year used on a office pc??

That is somewhat assuring Dipanzan. & delta 550W wont be able to pull a 580 for sure but 570 it may be ok. And on 12V, my delta has 18A

Wait, what ? Only 18A- bhaiya check again, you need more than that for the whole system to function properly. 18A is probably a bare minimum for the card itself excluding the system, is it a multi-rail design ? Sorry I dont know much about Delta PSUs.

I think I saw in the the delta site that this psu supplies 360w total in 12v rail.so I would say very risky to try GTX 570/580.

Only the +12v rails provide 360W.

I said the same. But if its capable of providing only 360w in +12v rail it won't cut it for GTX 570(tdp 220w).Not even if it is ATX12V V2.2 supported.

It provides total 360w combined in three 12v rail.I can't say what it should be.As it differs between the psu design actually. If it was designed better then it would have been better as the 650w delta psu have only three 12v rail with 16 amp.And theorically its volt X amparage=watts.Like in your psu, in 12v rail its 12v X 18 amp=216w;so three rail should provide 3x216=648 watt but it provides only 360w.Then comes 3.3v,5v rails they provide some power as it is atx12v v2.2 suppported.

Bottom line get a better psu for gtx 570/580.

    hey! @areek

    kemon aso bhai?

if you want my honest opinion then here it is:

    1. The delta psu that you have can output max 360w from the 12v rails. this the uppermost limit & no psu should be run at its limits.
    2. 18A is the individual highest you can draw from any rail. when both rails are loaded, the amperage should be less.
    3. if you gamble, and still want to use a gtx 570, you might run into efficiency limits of your psu, which might prevent you from running the gpu anyways. if you look at a few psu reviews, you'll notice that you cannot specifically draw a fixed percentage of load from any specific rail. if you want 80% load, then all the rails are taxed similarly. this is why newer revision psus are designed to output approximately 90% or higher of their rated wattage via the 12v rails.

Conclusion: if the delta unit was a monorail, high efficiency psu like a seasonic x560, you could have run a gtx 570 with your eyes closed. as it is not, it would be wise not to do so.

    tc!
