    Cool Shank 2

EA has agreed to foot the bill for a sequel to Klei’s laughably blood-spattered 2D sidescroller, Shank.

Due in 2012 via digital distribution on major platforms, Shank 2 introduces an arcade-style survival co-op mode, as well as building on fan feedback about the first game.

“Creatively, Shank still has a lot to give. We took the feedback from the community and ran with it, putting our own flavor on every change,” Klei founder Jamie Cheng said in the announcement press release.

“For Shank 2, we literally took apart the game and put it back together to push the envelope in combat mechanics, visuals, and 2D animation in games.”

As well as the original Shank – which was also published by EA Partners, and released on PC console networks last August – Klei is behind Eets, which was part of Portal 2′s ARG, and N+.

    Shank 2 Announcement Trailer

    ---------- Post added at 07:19 ---------- Previous post was at 07:08 ----------

    Shank 2
    Developer: Klei Entertainment
    Release: Q1/2012
    Genre: Action
    Platform: PS3/X360/PC
    Publisher: EA
    Website: www.shankgame.com

Shank 2 returns with a story of redemption as Shank, a former mob hitman with a dark and vengeful past, is thrust back into action when the lives of those close to him are endangered. Expanding on the original game's rich and intuitive combat and control system, Shank 2 continues Klei's tradition of making fluid brawling controls and stunningly beautiful visuals that leapfrogs the competition in the 2D side-scrolling genre. The game also introduces an intense new, arcade-style survival co-op mode that has gamers working together to take down their foes, relying on the environment and weapon pick-ups for survival.

    Shank 2: Embrace the Savagery
Why kill your enemy when you can maim him instead?

The goal of most video games involves defeating enemies in some way or another. Maybe you jump on their heads. Maybe you slash them with a sword. If you've been equipped with the wonders of modern science, you can even shoot them with lasers. But how about stabbing them with a machete, slashing them with a shovel, and then throwing them into an explosive barrel? These brutal combos make up the core gameplay component -- and fun -- of Shank 2.

If you couldn't already guess, Shank 2 follows in the footsteps of its predecessor as a downloadable game with enough action to make Jean-Claude Van Damme nod his head with pride. You assume control of the titular Shank and tear apart anything standing between you and Point B. The team at Klei has rebuilt the combat in Shank from the ground up to better serve the blood-thirsty soldier in all of us, which should make for cleaner, more responsive carnage.

If you missed out on the first Shank, you shouldn't need much of a history lesson. The general outline of Shank 2 comprises bad guys, and Shank killing them. The single-player campaign begins with a burning village and innocent people getting slaughtered. This setup explains Shank's knack for hacking dudes to bits.

Combat in Shank 2 is made up of a few key components. The first and most obvious entails Shank's ability to dish out direct damage with three different weapons: melee, ranged, and heavy-duty. As each weapon belongs to its own face button, you can use all of them at any time and switch between them mid-combo. Do you need to chainsaw a guy's face after a point-blank shotgun round? Probably not, but having a little bit of fun never hurt anyone (except him).

Shank's default weapons work wonders, but Shank has another gory trick up his sleeve: counters. When an enemy prepares an attack on Shank, a red exclamation mark will occasionally appear above the bad guy's head. Pull the trigger on time and Shank will not only stop the attack but turn the enemy's own weapon against him. In some cases, Shank will even apprehend his enemy's weapon and hold on to it, using it on other enemies in a flurry of blood and shovels.

Counters are brutal, and easy to pull off. But there are other ways to dispatch your enemies with a creative twist. Shank can pull a video game classic and detonate nearby explosive barrels with his long-range weapons, or he can toss a captive enemy into oncoming troops.

    Shank 2 Screenshots

The most satisfying aspect of Shank 2 involves stringing all these attacks together to create combos and earn extra points. You can literally shoot, stab, counter, jump, throw, and shoot some more in one breath. It feels great and brings skill-based scoring into an action-heavy romp that you'd otherwise think required no skill at all. It reminds me of games like Devil May Cry, where you can have plenty of fun mindlessly blasting your way through, or you can learn to milk the system for everything it's got. Throw in some intense boss battles and a dose of platforming and you'll see why Shank 2 has so much potential. So much bloody, bloody potential.

Sound like fun? I haven't even mentioned the visuals yet. Shank 2 is resplendent with silky, colorful animation that looks more like a live cartoon than a video game. The artists at Klei have done a phenomenal job making things look sharp, and that makes the in-game action all the more exciting.

This article is based on a 20 minute demonstration conducted by Klei Entertainment CEO Jamie Cheng and supervised by EA public relations. An incomplete build of the 360 version of Shank 2 was used for the demo, and included a hands-on play session as well as guided tutorial by Cheng.

Ryan Clements proudly serves IGN's PlayStation Team and enjoys shooting bad guys almost as much as he enjoys everything about Girls' Generation.

Exclusive: Shank 2's Survival Mode Plays Like a Hyperviolent 2D Horde Mode

"Our goal is stop the bombers from blowing up our s***." That's how Klei Entertainment CEO Jamie Cheng starts off a hands-on session with Shank 2's survival mode. Survival mode came out of two basic ideas: first, Cheng explains that, "the number one comment that we heard from Shank was that people wanted online multiplayer." But the team didn't want to just do an online version of Shank's cooperative campaign. "If we're going to add online multiplayer, it can't just be a one-and-done deal like the co-op campaign; it needs to be something fun and replayable." Hence, this survival mode; the co-op campaign won't return -- the developers have opted to focus their limited resources on fleshing out this mode.

Before we begin, I'm trying to figure out which weapons to use. Shank 2 goes for the "small arsenal where everything feels distinct" method rather than an expansive litany of killing instruments. I'm thinking: Equip the machete to rapidly chop through lots of guys? Or brandish a chainsaw that ensures my victory for one-on-one encounters? I eschew those options and settle on the sledgehammer, a brutish weapon that, while on the slow side, will slam its way through many foes due to its area-effect attack. For ranged weapons, I equip some trusty all-purpose pistols -- I'm not a good enough Shank player to properly use the shotgun for close range closure, nor can I properly exploit the stun effect that throwing knives inflict on their victims.
In a mirror of Shank's co-op campaign, Cheng and I play as Shank and Falcone respectively; the character choice at the moment is mostly a cosmetic difference, though Cheng points out that there's a new (and currently unnamed) female character who uses her own moveset. A bombed-out church serves as the setting (Cheng wouldn't verify just how many survival maps total there are), and we have two separate stashes of s*** to protect. Like other Gears of War 2 Horde-inspired modes, the bad dudes come at you in waves, and you're scored based on how many waves you, well, survive. Before the first wave starts, I have just enough time to get somewhat acquainted with the controls.

Shank looked and controlled pretty well, but Cheng comments that the developers took apart the combat system and retooled it for more responsiveness. He talks about how the team would examine frames to the point that you could cancel in the third frame if you wanted to. In practicality, even in my nine minutes of straight gameplay, the combat's responsiveness complements how smooth and effortlessly the visuals flow. Falcone jumps, grabs, swings, and wields when I want him to. Cheng specifically points out how the guns have been tweaked so that you can now aim all around in a full 360-degree range.

As the headline implies, this is Horde Done In 2D. Moment-to-moment combat is reminiscent of arcade beat-em-ups (down to baddies wielding, and then dropping, their baseball bats, knives, pipes, and so forth, upon death), but this gets punctuated by the intermissions between waves. Stringing together a combo of hits/stabs/swings results in extra money for purchasing items such as turrets, tequila, mines, and miniguns. Even these temporary items behave as items in a 2D beat-em-up should -- Cheng picks up and tosses his newly purchased turret at some hapless fools.

Like its predecessor, the art style helps the game significantly stand out. A nice touch includes how the bombers (baddies who specifically target the stash rather than arrive on-scene to cause general mayhem) always show up in the foreground first as a warning before jumping into the match. So watching the corners for goofy faces turns into a gameplay tactic. The hyperviolent art remains the same, and creates a certain combination of amusement and brutality for moments like seeing Shank or Falcone stab faces, slash necks, snap bones, and shoot brains. Tapping the right-bumper when an exclamation points pops up above some dude's head triggers a brutal counter-kill where you use that fellow's own weapon against him. Watching a survival session is like viewing a mash-up of The Venture Brothers and Machete through a Horde filter.
Around wave seven, a burly boss dude comes by and grabs me to smash against the floor multiple times before smacking Cheng around. Which in turn prevents him from his usual activity of reviving me whenever I get taken down. I feel pretty good about this, since it's the first time I ever play this mode, until Cheng comments that he's made it up to wave 17. While I'm practicing, you can (if you didn't already) check out my IGN colleague Ryan Clements' impressions of the single-player campaign below.

Shank 2 to have double the animation

The team of professional animators at Klei has increased its output for Shank 2.
“The goal here was to blow away our previous fidelity and set a new bar for ourselves,” Klei co-founder Jamie Cheng wrote on the US PS Blog.
“To do that, we doubled the resolution of all the source character art to push the graphic novel style, adding a huge amount of extra detail to the environment and even doubling the amount of animation in the game.”
In addition to a co-op mode, Klei is adding more destructible and interactive environments as well as the ability to use enemies’ weapons – sometimes before they’ve let go of them – and a 360 degree friing range.
