Lightbulb PC Gaming On the Rise, Set To Outsell Consoles by 2014 - NVIDIA

PC Gaming On the Rise, Set To Outsell Consoles by 2014 - NVIDIA

Some claim that PC gaming is dying. However, recent trends as explained by NVIDIA, disagree and it is in fact console gaming that will soon decline, as PCs have some compelling advantages such as ever improving graphics and moddability, to keep the gaming scene thriving. Techgage held a conference call with NVIDIA, where the company explained why PC gaming is on the up and up. PC gaming software sales are growing fast, according to this comparative graph and the predicted crossover point is 2014:

"What defines a 'PC'?" is a question that came to mind after seeing this graph, but it appears that it's just what we think it is... a PC; desktop or notebook. Mobile gaming products such as tablets and smart phones are not included in this forecast (likely a good thing, as I'm sure it'd put a damper on things). The Xbox 360 was released in 2005, and both the PlayStation 3 and Wii were released in 2006. That means that there's been a full five years since the last current console was released, so it's almost not hard to understand why PC gaming could begin to go on the rise. After all, while Nintendo announced its next console, the Wii U, it's not impressive performance-wise, and neither Microsoft nor Sony have given the vibe that either are close to an announcement for their own upcoming consoles.Rumors also have it that next-gen consoles from both Microsoft and Sony may not be exactly what we expect, and for some, whatever changes are entailed might not be classified as good changes to the average gamer. One thing's for sure though - PC gaming's allure is greater than ever, for a multitude of reasons (reasons that could fill an article on its own). Here's a great one:

So, how long can consoles hold out with their static, aging technology? Not much longer, one would expect.

When the Xbox 360 was released in 2005, it offered some sweet graphics for the time, but capabilities-wise, PCs were still about 40% faster. Since the current crop of consoles haven't budged in terms of performance, NVIDIA said that the current crop of GPUs make the PC up to 10x as powerful as consoles - and in some regards, I'd be willing to bet that delta could increase even more.If Microsoft or Sony release a new console next year, or the year after, they're both likely to blow their predecessors out of the water in terms of graphics and other features. But we're still going to face the problem of the last generation, where PCs are going to be more capable from the get-go, and will only get better as time passes.Let's put those facts to pictures. Below are four images, in the order of old-new-old-new, including Battlefield 2, released in 2005 (the same year as the Xbox 360), and Battlefield 3, to be released next month. There's just no comparison. The latter has far greater texture detail, good use of ambient occlusion, depth-of-field and lighting techniques, while the former just looks... well, out-dated.

For development of Battlefield 3, EA set out to make the PC the best platform possible to experience the game. Patrick Bach, EA's Executive Producer for the game has said, "PCs are way more powerful than consoles today. We're aiming to use the PC to set the bar." As a result, BF3 is using an entirely different lighting engine than the one consoles will see, and of course, DirectX 11 is also being added into the mix, among other capabilities (larger maps, more players per map).We must ask - where will we be six years from now? Will we be greeting Battlefield 5 and looking back atBattlefield 3, wondering what we were so impressed about?Another interesting statistic that NVIDIA raised is this one:

As of 2008, boxed copies of games had paltry sales compared to digital sales, and nothing at all looks to change. During 2011, nearly $15 billion is going to be attributed to digital sales while $2.5 billion belong to boxed copies. This is a trend I have to admit I am not surprised by. I'll never purchase another boxed copy if I can help it.The death of PC gaming has long been a mocking-point of console gamers, but recent trends show that the PC has nothing to stress over. One such trend is free-to-play, where games are inherently free, but support paid-services such as purchasing in-game items. This has proven wildly successful, and has even caused the odd MMORPG to get rid of it subscription fee. It's also caused a lot of games to be developed with the F2P mechanic decided from the get-go.League of Legends is one good example. With a reported 15 million gamers worldwide, there are more people playing it than World of Warcraft. Games like these just don't work that well on consoles (where the bulk of the profits are the result of off-the-shelf games), but on the PC... they're thriving. Even Valve has jumped on the bandwagon by regularly releasing free-to-play games on its Steam platform.

One of the biggest pluses of the PC is modding, and without it, games like League of Legends and Defense of the Ancients may not even exist. There are over 15 million playing LoL and I'm sure the numbers are comparable with DoTA, Heroes of Newerth and the ton of other free-to-play games.I admit I am not a fan of the free-to-play mechanic, but there's little denying that it's done well to surge interest in PC gaming, which should as a whole help the platform - and based on the trends shown in the top-most graph, it already has. Not only are these games popular, but competitions are regularly held that offer million-dollar prizes. In one of the below photos, a room filled with 20,000 game spectators is shown, watching a StarCraft IIcompetition, with a mention that 35 million gamers were streaming the event from 171 different countries.

I think it's safe to say that PC gaming is alive and well, regardless of how it's being accomplished. Now if you don't mind, I'm going to go indulge in some high-resolution gaming.

Simply an Nvidia opinion. Ar keo opinion de nai. In terms of sales, PC outdoes the consoles but as far as the overall gaming experience is concerned, PC is no match for the consoles.

We will find out in 2014 whether this is true; but as a computer gamer myself, I will be happy if it is true.

Can PC even achieve graphics of Forza 4 with this hardware? PC doesn't even have a good sim..

anyways, you don't even like sims.

We will see when 2014 comes. Microsoft is due to announce the new Xbox in 2012.

Ofcourse, i am a PC supporter, but in terms of games, console is pretty much obvious.

PCs will be sold as they were on their regular basis, on the real thing they were meant to serve, surf teh internets, use facebook, etc. Console is overtaking PC because it doesn't have half of the piracy PC faces, which attracts developers, and just because of this, PC exclusives are coming to an end and whilst some consoles feature so called "Low-end spec"(remember, there is no processor that has still outcomed Cell processors of PS3), they feature mind bending graphics and engaging stories which attracts most of the gamers of PC, that's why more of the PC gamers shift to Console. for example, PC gamers were astonished by Max Payne, but similiar deeply engaged games are coming out, such as "Alan Wake"/"Heavy Rain". Gamers are moving on to Consoles. Consoles are meant for gaming, PCs are meant for calculation and tasks. Using the wrong thing is just way too wrong.

I know many people disagrees with me, but they will know when they actually use a console.

@Rakin , "Consoles" bolle bhul hobe. Sony always comes with an alien tech that humans find the same but at a different architecture of tech about 8-10 years later.

Most people think time is like a river, that flows swift and sure in one direction. But I have seen the face of time, and I can tell you, they are wrong. Time is an ocean in a storm. You may wonder who I really am, and why I say this. Come, and I will tell you a tale like none you have ever heard.

PC gaming on the rise. Its just a marketing campaign. PC will never beat consoles. And high-end GPUs are nothing. Give me a perfect GPU which can serve the PC gaming for atleast 5 years, there is none.
But PSone, PS2(the best gaming platform of all generations), PS3,XBOX,XBOX 360; each one will give you a peaceful gaming experience for atleast 5-6 years without the hassle of upgrading.

Forza 3 is not a arcade racing game like Dirt or NFS. It is a sim. And why are telling a decent game suck and worst? Please clarify.

Charts don't account for next consoles to be released, highly doubt PCs will still be 10x more powerful then

And its jsut sad to see they are comparing BF2 vs BF3 and trying to create an illusion. At least they could've shown BF3 consoles vs BF3 PC. There would still be a big difference but not as much as those pictures.

And no Rakin, consoles strength is it's standardisation, not exclusives. Can you imagine a world of games where every PC had a GTX580? Graphics would be insane! But sadly a 580 alone costs over 500USD so thats not going to happen any time soon. Its a known fact that consoles drive game technology, and that will still remain as long as the market for consoles is larger than that of the PC.

Who cares about PC taking over the current gen of consoles lol. They'll have other big things to worry about from 2012/13

pc joto high end e hok na keno....developer ra jdi GOW/GEARS etc. er moto exclusive game release na kore....then pc gaming will never rise.....
I personally prefer pc gaming not only for the awesome gameplay[mouse+keyboard] for first and third person shooting.....but also the better graphics comparing to old consoles....bt consoles have the upper hand cuz they have some exclusive titles coming.....bt pc teo idaning astese jemn witcher2.
    So we shouldnt compare them.
And NVIDIA ja bolse shob e thik....bt 2014 e new ps4 ar xbox 720 asar possibility ase. Then the results may vary.

The Witcher is coming to XBOX 360.. and Crysis is not anymore a PC exclusive.
And the Call of Duty sells are also high in Xbox 360,PS3 than PC.

You have no idea just how much more powerful an average PC is compared to the consoles. The only thing is that the games are coded much better for the consoles.

Look at BF3 and compare the graphics of the console(s) and PC. Do the math then.

After the release, we will do.
And one question-Can a 2006 PC runs BF3 as same as consoles?
And PC is not only for gaming, so obviously they are more powerful than a console. So this is not a big deal at all when our sole concern is gaming.
