Default Need help finding a headphone within 15k

Guys please suggest me a Sennheiser (hope I spelled it right) headphone within 10-15k BDT. I may be able to bring one from abroad. And I am confused about closed back or open back one as both has their pros and cons. While suggesting, keep in mind that the usage will be -
    • Gaming = 30%
    • Music = 60% (50% Metal + 25% Rock + 15% Pop + 10% Hip hop and others)
    • Movies = 10%
They must be comfortable for long sessions lasting 2-3 hours.

The reason I am looking for Senns is that someone said he can bring only Senns from a source. But if you suggest other HPs, then please also mention where to get them from.

I was looking for the Shure SRH440 for months but can't seem to get one. So, if anyone can manage one (brand new) that would be great.

BTW, the HPs will be powered by an Asus Xonar Essence STX soundcard with internal headphone amp.

That's from Shure, but he clearly said he cannot bring Shure products. I am stuck within Sennheiser.

@proton_chain , actually Mazhar was over the other day, and he brought with him his dad 's HD650 so that i could demo it. And the problem is, after listening to that pair, my perceptions have changed to such an extent that i 'm totally biased towards it regardless of the humungous price tag. Since you have the STX, if by means it is possible (i know i'm sounding inhuman) to extend the budget to 400$, grab the hd650, you 'll know after listening to it that you 've utilized every penny for good reasons.

I haven 't listened to the other cans from sen, but the one within 100$ is the hd280pro, which i managed to put over my ears (but couldn 't listen to them because the jack was not soldered) and i 'll tell you that it has a good build-quality but also has a great clamping force (which I did 't mind for that minute, but i seriously doubt you 'll find comfortable for long periods of usage). Mazhar says it doesn 't sound acceptable. I have the SRH440 and that is why i suggested you that, because i love them. I also had a pair of Audio-Technica ATH M-50 for a couple of days and i sent them back because i didn 't like it although most head-fi ers love them. It had an inferior sound stage and build quality compared to the 440, was a bit dull, not as kicking and alive and hence not much fun to listen to as the 440, and it wasn 't comfortable at all, the clamping force was great and the the fit was not perfectly circumaural for me. Sound is a very subjective thing and the taste varies from person to person.

Open cans will give you a wider sounstage presence and more warmth to the music. They sound more natural and there is more clarity, better separation. However the bass response is usually butchered in most open cans and there is more leakage and less isolation in open back headphones.

Closed back headphones sound more darker, have a less wider soundstage and tend to have a boxed-in effect due to resonance of certain frequencies which translates to distortion. They offer better isolation, less leakage and hence does not disturb the environment. I always preferred closed back headphones, because i always thought the low-end freq response is completely lacking in open back cans, until Mazhar introduced me to the HD650 that is.

You should first decide between open and closed backs and then make your decison within the budget. Sound is such a subjective thing that it is extremely difficult to tell which you 'll prefer over the other without actually listening to them all. One head-fier 's wet dream could be your nightmare, just like the M-50 was for me.

Well, I have been looking all over for the SRH440 for months, but still no luck. Where did you get yours from? Can you get me one? I also like the 440. Otherwise Sennheisers are the only options. And I do not have that much money right now to invest on $500-600 HPs. I have to keep it within $200, I've already spent a lot on the STX recently.

Only time will tell. Most probably not apart from gears and chassis (I currently have the Space one lol ). I already have enough for the work I do I think. The sound system was lacking, so trying to fix that now.

No I just got myself a Creative X-Fi Titanium Fata1ty Champion series. Moreover my speakers are 5:1 Analog 3.5mm jack so i wont be able to use those with the STX.

And guys please suggest a Sennheiser (hope I spelled it right) headphone within 10-15k BDT.
Where are you planning to get it from? Headphones, as Hemlock said, are very subjective. Do you prefer neutrality, an emphasis on bass, mids or highs? Open or closed back? How much does soundstage matter? Tell me your preferences and ill give you a suggestion.

With your speakers, next to no difference. If you want an internal amp + DAC to use with good headphones, get an Auzentech X-Fi Forte or an Essence ST + H6 daughter board.

I think the STX would be an overkill for a carcharias. I was looking for that as Titanium does not have any internal hp amp to power those big boys. So, I decided not to go over that. But now I'm thinking... as I wanted to spend 6.5k for a carcharias, why not add a few k more and get a better one? Because I am not going to swith to a better one in near future.

I'm a noob when it comes to audio related things. I dont know what I should like. But here's what I "think" I want: Bass response should be good but should not cover the clarity. I like both open and closed backs, so you can suggest both. I mainly listen to melodic death metals that feature a variety of instruments focusing more on mids and highs. I also listen to heavy/thrash/power metals, hard/soft/progressive rock and similar genres. But my mom listens to pop a lot and bass response should be powerful for them to really come out. I told what I'm going to do with it, now you decide what you should put more emphasis on. I don't quite understand "neutrality" or "soundstage" of a headphone, so Im not gonna risk answering those.

Bottom line: Clear and crisp sound, powerful but not overwhelming bass, both closed/open backs so long as it feels comfortable for constant 1-2 hours of usage.

Hmm, you can either get one single can or multiple cans for different genres. I would say go with the SRH-440 for a relatively balanced all around headphone and a Grado SR-80 for purely rock/metal. If you want one only, you can go for the Audio Technica ATH-A900/ATH-AD700. Those two are very similar but the AD700 is open whereas the A900 is closed. Compared to the 440, there isnt that much of a difference, slightly bigger soundstage, bass response, slightly more extended highs but cant match the 440 for mids. You might go for the SRH-840 as well, but the difference between 440 and 840 isnt that great but I did somewhat enjoy the 840 more from my ST. Differences are the 840 has slightly better bass extension, slightly less punch in the bass, better mids and similar highs. Rather than 840, get 440 + SR-80. I would also recommend the SRH-750DJ, but they arent that comfortable so unless you wear one and check it out yourself, dont buy it. I personally am quite satisfied with it though. About sound, they are similar to the 440's but are more lively and have more bass (punch + extension)

For a marginally better bass response, get the Ultrasone HFI-580 or Beyerdynamic DT770 (the regular one, not the 32/600 Ohm). They have extended bass response, good mids/highs and but wont compare to the 440/840 for mids or the Audio Technicas for soundstage. Still, the DT770 are built well and have very good separation, bass is slightly more than the HFI-580 and have decent mids/highs. Great set of cans.

Avoid the Sennheisers, ive tried many and while the HD598/HD280 are a decent set of headphones, they dont compare to the ones listed here. Unless you can get the HD650, dont look at Senns. However, for a budget you can look at the HD380 Pro + SR80i as well, though admittedly SRH440>HD380 Pro.

I really think you should get two cans for your budget, try getting the SRH440 + Grado SR-80i. While you might think youre sacrificing something greater, its not really true. For example, a $300 headphone might be superior to the Grado for everything else but not metal. Similarly that $300 headphone might be relatively similar to the 440 for everything else but be much superior for rock/metal. Getting the 440 and SR-80 allows you to cover most genres with ease since metal is the 440's only slight weakness(can be EQ'd and fixed somewhat though) and SR-80 is made for it. Its all upto you though.

Finally, replace OPAMPS in your STX. That way you can tune the sound slightly to your taste.

I have also been thinking about it myself for last few days, I like the idea. But the result is - I want to start with one, and then add another when I learn more about these in depth.

I think it would be an injustice to my parents to ask for so many expensive things one after another. They may say yes but the question is - should I? Maybe I'll look at them later on when I myself can afford them.

Blew over my n00b-head. Okay, a but of googling revealed that replacing OPAMPS may boost details in certain frequencies. I currently have no plan of doing that in near future. Maybe sometime in distant future.

Let me summarize the gathered info in a table...

    Brand
    Model
    Frequency Range
    Impedance
    Price
    Shure SRH440 10 Hz - 22 kHz 44 Ω $100
    Shure SRH840 5 Hz - 25 kHz 44 Ω $150
    Shure SRH750DJ 5 Hz - 30 kHz 32 Ω $150
    Grado SR-80 20 Hz - 20 kHz 32 Ω $100
    Audio Technica ATH-A900 5 Hz - 40 kHz 40 Ω $170
    Audio Technica ATH-AD700 5 Hz - 30 kHz 32 Ω $90
    Ultrasone HFI-580 10 Hz - 22 kHz 32 Ω $190
    Beyerdynamic DT770 5 Hz - 35 kHz 250 Ω $250
    Sennheiser HD 598 12 Hz - 38.5 kHz 50 Ω $250
    Sennheiser HD 280 Pro 8 Hz - 25kHz 64 Ω $100
    Sennheiser HD 380 Pro 8 Hz - 27 kHz 54 Ω $200
    Sennheiser HD 650 10 Hz - 39.5 kHz 300 Ω $500

Looking at the table amazes me again. So many options...

I am kinda biased towards SRH440. The SRH840 is nearly 2x costlier and 2x heavier but is it worth? Reviews say no, so does Mazhar vaia's opinion. So... can anyone get me a Shure SRH440? @Hemlock ; Vaia where did you get it from? The price is just right, the usage fits perfectly, I like the look of it... then why can't I get it! Anyone?

If you don 't think that the price tag of the expensive ones are justified, you should 've not bought the STX in the first place. What drove you to buy that stereo soundcard for 12.5k? How would you answer if I may ask?

There isn 't a noticeable jump from the 440 to the 840(becuase i 've heard both and BTW who told you it 's twice as heavier?), but there are good logical reasons as to why headphones can be priced at even $1800. The HD650 if you ask me, well it 's more bang for buck than the 440 if budget permits. You believe that? Yes, it 's like 10 times better.

I got the 440 from States and unfortunately becuase they were not burned in, initially i wasn 't impressed by it right out of the box. So i sold them to a friend and after i heard them a couple of days later, i took it from him and haven 't returned it to him yet.

According to Mazhar vaia's opinion about 440 and 840 I thought product performance does not scale linearly with price. That's what I thought, aleady said I'm a noob in terms of audio related things. I do video related works, but can't even work in FL sutdio as I don't understand a thing. And the manufacturer's website has info regarding their weight - 181 and 317.5 respectively. Editing the last post.

Is there any way I could get the 440? I have (almost) made up my mind.
