Default AMD's Bulldozer News And Discussion

8429.38MHz is the new CPU Frequency World Record claimed by a near-production desktop version of AMD’s FX Bulldozer CPU! Overclockers.com witnessed the event first hand in Austin, TX at AMD Headquarters on August 31st during an AMD FX pre-launch briefing, and the record is set to be confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records and HWBot.org. The new AMD FX record smashes AMD’s previous best of 7378.25MHz set with a Phenom II 955 Black Edition.

Nice video of the event here.

Now I feel like selling my recently bought SB parts and going AMD again. Even if it fails to perform up to the mark (not saying it'l fail) it will still be much, much more fun to overclock than the uber boring sandy bridge's + BD will scale better under cold.

    Damn.

Very nice, but it seems AMD is pretty late to the party. Let's see how the tri-gates perform in the Ivy Bridge...

Honestly, what were you expecting? 10ghz? How could you be expecting a certain frequency from a chip which wasnt even launched yet?

It seems some people werent happy with 'only' the highest frequency ever recorded. Im not saying anything about IPC, but give the chaps some credit for the record.

Nope, IB is H1 2012, SB-E will be out by the end of this year around the time when BD launches. AFAIK, IB is still pre alpha and operating under 1.5ghz with bugs being worked out

Nope, IB is H1 2012, SB-E will be out by the end of this year around the time when BD launches. AFAIK, IB is still pre alpha and operating under 1.5ghz with bugs being worked out
Mazhar bhaiya what would be the best(cheapest) BD for me right now ?- I really want an efficient processor, not too much current draw & I'm happy ^_^

Right now, the best and cheapest BD for you would be, err, nothing. It doesnt exist.

But when they do get released, try grabbing a FX-6100, get a cooler and OC the crap out of it. Oh wait, you dont want too much current draw, in which case dont OC the crap out of it and look for the sweet spot and dont raise volts and maybe undervolt (they are extremely voltage tolerant, unlike SB)

4 core (2 module) BD will take an extra month or two to get released after the initial 6 and 8 core chips.

ayyyee, I see! I thought BD got released, sorry for the confusion!

I do have to buy an aftermarket cooler, though my current(stock) one is doing a damn fine job(AMD's cooler waaaay better than Intel's offering), that is my 955 clocked at 3.8GHz, stock volts- temps around 65C at load, it's just that I dont like the 125W TDP

It's good to know that they are voltage tolerant, I hope underclocking BDs will be an adventure, the sweet spot that is!

It's best to wait awhile, dip bro, let Bulldozer settle and get comfy, wait for a few revisions and then going for one, and in the mean time, I'm putting a tentative claim on your current processor

    But
    i7 980x with 6 Cores @ 6 Cores and 12 threads @ 7.195 GHz
    is far superior than
    AMD 8 core Processor @ 2 cores 2 Threads @ 8.429 GHz
So we want to see how much it can OC with 8 core enabled.

AMD benchmarks FX-Series Bulldozer Against Intel CPUs
By Hilbert Hagedoorn, September 17, 2011 - 1:54 PM via hardware.info and softpedia

Over at this weeks IDF AMD was closeby to the Intel event with a mini press event, one of the more interesting demonstrations is a comparison between an unreleased FX-Series processor and some Intel Core CPUs.
AMD hasn't disclosed the specs of the Bulldozer processor that is used for this comparison, but two different scenarios have been shown to demonstrate the power of its chips.

The first one of these pits an eight-core AMD FX processor against an unspecified Intel Core i5 Sandy Bridge CPU, both systems running Handbrake to convert a 5-minute H.264 video in SD resolution.
According to our Dutch colleagues from Hardware Info, the Bulldozer FX processor performs this task with an average of 223 frames per second, where the Core i5 machine gets 188 fps. Unfortunately the infotrmation regarding both brand processors is too vague to make any real sense.

But core i5 is a quad core processor wheras the FX processor used had eight cores.

Both systems will be comparable in price according to AMD, but yeah Bulldozer requires twice the numbers of cores in this massively threaded application tosurpass an Intel Core i5 by just 20% in a multi-threaded benchmark like Handbrake.

The second scenario has the same FX-Series processor fighting against a Core i7 980X in Dirt 3 at a 2560x1600 resolution, both systems featuring two Radeon HD 6790 cards setup in CrossFire.

The Intel machine finishes this benchmark with an average frame rate of 80.9 fps, while the much cheaper AMD desktop averaged 82.8 fps. Here again a comment I want to make, they choose a very GPU limited resolution.

AMD hasn't made any official statements over the launch date of the first FX-Series processors other than saying these will arrive in Q4 of 2011. Well you may expecty a release in half October.

If this is true, then with my tiny knowledge I can say that Bulldozer will have a hard time.
