    Default PC randomly restarts

Well, I've been getting this problem for the last couple of weeks.

Basically around once a day or so, my PC will randomly restart. The time at which it restarts is not fixed. And it doesn't doesn't really restart under heavy load, I've played heavy load games through and it didn't restart. It restarted once while playing a 480p video in Media Player Classic, and sometimes just from the desktop. And it doesn't happen everyday, like once every two days or so... There is no BSOD, just a normal restart without any warning.

Just before it restarts, my UPS goes to 'red light' mode (meaning no charge on UPS) and then quickly turns to 'green light' mode (meaning it is charged) once it starts restart. Though my UPS is insufficient for my PC (650VA). I've tried connecting the PC/Monitor directly to the current, but I still got the problem. Although, there is some voltage problem in my room (the light in my room often keeps flickering the brightness intensity).

I've checked my GPU, and its at 50C at 50% fan speed most of the time. Max I've seen it is at 60C. So, I guess overheating isn't the problem.
I don't know how to check CPU temp so IDK.
And I'm, not sure if its a power problem, since I have a TR2 500W which should be enough for my rig?

Any suggestions on how I can fix this?

    1. did u oc ur cpu?
    2. as well as ur ram?
    3. r u using ur gpu with molex power connector?
    4. r u using multiple fans in ur chessis and if so how many?
    5. what is the age of ur psu?
    6. from when u r facing this specific problem?

    suggestion-
    1. check weather ur ram and cpu has any error with prime95(10 mins would be ok in "Blend" mode)
    2. check ur rams stability with memtest
    4. try "load optimized default" option in Bios in ur motherboard,
    5. install latest drivers for ur components
    6. re install windows
    7. and if u have guts may try to check with occt for any error related to psu(must have aftermarket cooler, very risky process no one is responsible for any hw failure),

P.S.- any of these might resolve ur problem, but if u can answer above questions it will be easier to troubleshoot your problem..

afaik ur 500w tr2 has only one 6pin pci express slot and HD 6850 requires dual 6pin pci express connectors, so as u have one u need to connect another using a molex power cable(correct me if i'm wrong)

so do u use any ups for in case of sudden power failure and as u said, before the problem showing up did ur pc shut down or stop statically(without properly shut down) for the reason of any power failure(load shedding etc)?

would u plz check your current wattage requirement of ur pc with this and report.

another thing did u tried any suggestion i mentioned in my previous post, if so report.

    Thank u..

If you're certain about the voltage flactuation, switch to a good UPS and the problem will be most likely gone. Response time of your current UPS seems too much to avoid 2-5ms power cut. Get a minimum of 800/1000VA UPS of either Micro or Rangs.

if you have another cassing then try to run your pc on that or if u don't have then just unplug "powerSW/resetSW"
cable from your mobo just after booting up....i know this may seem weird to u but trust me most of the time this kind of random shutdown/restert occur due to faulty power/restert switch of the casing...

Since you mention that the problem still persists after plugging it directly from the mains, I guess it's more of a PSU, board problem!

Try one thing, update the BIOS of the board, install MSI Live Update, it's a easy process! Do a manual scan ~select BIOS & you are good to go! But do connect your UPS or have some backup ready, as once the board's flashing itself, any power loss/interruption will render your board useless!- Warning!

Try IBT/FM or OCCT for a complete system stability test, if it restarts- then it's most likely the PSU!

Compared to your system, mine's more power hungry running a 955BE at 3.8GHz, 990FX board, GTX460 OCed, 7 case fans- & no hint of a restart even when playing games for like 5-6hrs straight!

Get your wall sockets and electricity wiring checked by an expert electrician, as you've mentioned, your room does have electricity supply issues.

It seems like a hardware problem,do a full system maintenance.Like check the connections in your pc;see that the connectors are connected firmly with mobo, cpu, gpu etc.check every connection.Reinstall windows then update bios.If this doesn't solve the problem then its probably the psu or ups.I would say change the ups first cause its not enough for the system.

I'd have suggested that it's a Hardware Problem if it weren't for that UPS indication, it kinda seems to me as if the wall socket is failing to provide enough power at times and the UPS fails to provide backup because it's not sufficient for this PC of yours, but it's just my wild guess, could be a hardware problem but that UPS indication definitely points to something.

Well, firstly, I'm a hardware noob, so I don't really want to open up my casing and poke around

Could perhaps link me to those software and I'll take a look.

Also, the PC had been running fine the first few weeks after it had been bought. This problem just started like 1 or 2 weeks ago.

I used the http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine and it said :
    Minimum PSU Wattage: 294 W
    Recommended PSU Wattage: 344W

And yes, the voltage in my room is fuched, anyone who stays in my room for more than 30mins can notice the lights doing it. If I'm not using an UPS and connect my PC to the mains, my pc will shutdown and restart whenever the light starts flickering brightness. But since its doing it even with a UPS, thats what concerns me (the UPS provides backup fine when its a loadshedding, but not when its a voltage fluctuation).

Also I don't think its GPU related as I've played GFX heavy games for 4hrs straight with no restart.

I really don't want to dig deep into the hardware unless its really necessary. So I guess, I'll get a new UPS and see if the problem persists?
And if its still there with the new UPS, I'll have to get the PC checked out. :/

you have your problem right there!- What is the brand of the UPS- make, model, VA ?

A new UPS would only be a temporary solution Flame! I suggest your fix your voltage thingy with an electrician & then buy a good UPS!

b4 wasting money on a new UPS u should check with a good one.....remember your restert happens randomly, not only under heavy load. its not like that your UPS is unable to provide sufficient power since it can provide backup well during load sheedding...anyway it still can be but possiblity is low IMO...
it also could've been due to sudden fall of input voltage of your room, like sometimes our room voltage fall suddenly when our refrigerator starts & it causes my pc to restart(note that i don't use any UPS)....but this problem might be solved by using good UPS
so i think you should check out your pc from a good servicing center before getting a new UPS......

Well, I haven't read the above posts, so don't know if you have got a solution.

I have seen it happening to a lot of people, including myself. But in my case, the PC showed BSODs at desktop, browser, that means, when the PC was idle. After alot of research, I came to a conclusion that my graphics card was the main culprit. I took it for RMA, but the UCC guys just kept it for a couple of weeks, and in the meantime, disassembled the card, cleaned it, put it back without applying thermal paste, and returned it. Again after lots of experiments and research, I found out that the idle voltage [0.95V] was not enough for the idle clocks [157/300]. Then I changed the idle voltage from 0.95V to 1.00V by editing the bios, and everything was then rock stable. Well I don't recommend you doing this, just letting you know that you're not alone, I had almost the same problem and I successfully overcame it

DON'T DO THIS, TRY TO FIND OUT A BETTER SOLUTION
