this one is very detailed and should be helpful for photoshop noobs.
How I make my userbar (photoshop cs 8.0):
I open a new image –using standard measures.
i get this.
Next I select gradient tool and draw a gradient background. I might also use a background image. I shall use 3d effect for gradient background and glow effect for image background
Lets use colors.
3d effect: now I right click on layer 1 and choose ‘blending options’.
I select ‘bevel and emboss’ and set bevel size to 15.
So the background looks like this now.
Glow effect: I can also use the glow effect instead of 3d. first I create a new layer (Layer 2).
Next I use the elliptical marquee tool to select a portion of the layer.
The selection should look like this.
I use paint bucket tool to pour white color on the selection.
Then I reduce fill of the layer to get glow.
Scanline effect: Next I apply the scanline effect. (I’m keeping the one with 3d effect). First I open a new image using these settings.
I zoom it 1600% and using pencil and gray color I draw this:
Then I go to edit>define pattern and I save this image as a pattern.
Next I create another layer on the userbar and go to edit >fill and select the pattern I created for fill.
I may wish to change the layer opacity (above fill) or go to image>adjustments>hue/saturation to change lightness so I get the scanlines.
Next I’ll put the logo. Say we have this logo:
It has transparent background. Its height is 15 pixels so it’ll do with the bar. I copy and paste it on to the bar and use the move tool to move it (zooming in will help).
(I also put some outer glow: by right clicking the current logo layer and go to blending options)
Next I’ll write ‘FIFA08 PLAYER’ using the text tool. We have to use a pixel font. I use Visitor TT1 BRK. It can be found from Google search or from dafont.com .font size is 10 pt.
Then I stroke the text –right click the text layer and choose blending options.
The bar is almost complete... but i'll tweak with the background a little at this time..
I select the background layer (Layer 1), go to edit>stroke and strike it too with 1px black:
So the fifa08 userbar finally looks like this.
We could use some animations too.. some other day.
