    Talking Valve Announces Counter-Strike: Global Offensive [ CS:GO ]

    About the Game

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched 12 years ago.

CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year's PAX Prime and London Games Festival.

New Counter-Strike is Real, hits PS3, Xbox 360, Mac and PC in Early 2012

The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive rumors were true. Valve Software announced the game today and already added a listing for it to Steam. In a press release, Valve said that "CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more."

The team-based shooter game is "targeted" for an early 2012 release on the Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade, the PlayStation 3's PlayStation Network, Mac and PC in early 2012.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," Valve spokesman Doug Lombardi said in today's announcement.

The game is being co-developed by Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment (the latter of whom worked with Valve on updates to Counter-Strike: Source, the game's most recent major release) and will be playable at PAX Prime in two weeks in Seattle as well as at the London Games Festival.

Interesting. I wonder what those Valve protesters are thinking right now. They were demanding a long-lost sequel from Valve, weren't they?

    Counter-Strike: Global Offensive gameplay details
Valve already letting players go hands-on with its just-announced shooter

Valve has already let a select few elite Counter-Strike players go hands on with its new multiplatform edition, Counter Strike: Global Offensive.

As well as providing feedback to Valve, these players have posted hands-on impressions of what they saw, including a bunch of gameplay details.

"Valve was quick to make clear that this wasn't 'CS2' (or whatever that even really means) but rather a a multi-platform team based FPS similar to its predecessors, Counter-Strike 1.6, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, and Counter-Strike: Source," said ESEA News' tester (thanks Kotaku).

"It is designed on the updated Source Engine, but is not built off of Counter-Strike: Source and due out in early 2012 with beta access beginning this fall. It will maintain the traditional de_ and cs_ map types and would not include new game modes. Valve was keen on hearing the input from top CSS players to make CS GO an e-sports title and that is reflected by the game featuring both casual and competitive game modes with a built in match making system and support for dedicated servers."

They go on to say that the graphics and animation in the new game have been vastly improved and "look beautiful". "We got to play dust, dust2, inferno, and nuke with confirmation that other CS classic maps such as train and likely some new ones will be included in the release," says the report.

CS players are precious about the game's near-perfect physics, but the report says Valve hasn't hesitated to make significant changes. "It didn't feel like 1.6 and despite being built on the Source engine, it didn't feel like CSS," says the report. "By design, Valve wanted to create a game with a different feel, and overall it was really smooth. The pro players seemed surprisingly happy with the player movement and feel of the game but thankfully they weren't short of feedback and most weren't shy to share it. Tweaks and adjustments are needed, but in my opinion, it was a great sign that it didn't grossly offend anyone."

It mentions some small issues found with the game's weapon balance, with some of the older weapons proving too inaccurate and new ones being overpowered, but Valve seemed willing to react to the feedback.

It details new weapons and equipment, too. "New weapons were added, including a new heavy machine gun rifle, new pistols, and a new shotgun," it reveals, before detailing the Molotov Cocktail and Decoy Grenade items.

"They added molotov cocktails, an expensive $850 item, which can be used to slow down opponents and re-route opponents through AOE damage," it says.

"Decoy grenades are also a new item that can be thrown to emit gun sounds and give the illusion of there being a player."

That's the meat of it but there's a load more through the source link.

The PS3, 360 and PC game is targeted for release early next year.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Confirmed Features & Info

    What is CS:GO?:

    Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
(also known as CS:GO or CSGO) is the third and latest installment in Valve Software‘s critically-acclaimed Counter-Strike series, which is arguably the most popular and successful multiplayer first-person shooter on the PC in history and has dominated the online action market for more than a decade. It uses the Source engine and is slated for release in the first quarter of 2012 (in Valve Timethat is), and will be available on PC as well as Xbox 360 (on the Xbox Live Arcade) and PlayStation 3 (on the PlayStation Network). It is intended to appeal to both casual and competitive gamers.

    The Basics:
    • Title: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
    • Developed by: Valve Software, Hidden Path Entertainment
    • Published by: Valve Software
    • Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Mac
    • Game Modes: Casual and Competitive
    • Map Types: Both defuse (de_) and hostage (cs_) maps will be returning
    • Release: Q1 2012
    • Engine: Latest Source engine (Portal 2)
    • Beta: first wave of closed beta keys to be given out at PAX and Eurogamer in late August / early September
    Confirmed Features / Information:

    IMPORTANT:
The game is in pre-beta status at the present time and is still heavily under development, so many of these features may change before beta or release, but at the time of writing they were indicative of gameplay in the current build. All facts can be sourced from the articles and videos in the reference list at the bottom of the page.
    • Matchmaking system for teams and individuals (with Elo rating system)
    • Focus on competitive 5v5 play and eSports
    • Ranked servers run by Valve (Competitive mode only)
    • Dedicated servers run by players (Casual mode only)
    • LAN support confirmed
    • Ranked / Ladder play for both individuals and 5 man teams (Competitive mode)
    • Bullet penetration through some walls / materials / objects
    • Classic CS gameplay – no ironsights
    • Competitive and Casual modes
    • Gameplay derived from both CS 1.6 and CS: Source with new twist
    • Weapons have been rebalanced to make weapon selection more interesting (so that players use more than the typical AK, M4, AWP, and Desert Eagle)
    • Beta is on PC only, starts in early September as a closed beta
    • Defuse and Hostage maps
    • Molotov grenades: create a pool of fire on the ground which slows movement speed of players crossing it and causes area of effect damage
    • Decoy grenades: emit fake weapon firing sounds to confuse enemies about your team’s position
    • New money system / weapon and equipment prices
    • Kevlar and helmet cannot be purchased, are given at beginning of every round like ammo
    • Ammo doesn’t need to be bought (like CS:S)
    • SourceTV not currently a priority
    • Forced DirectX 9 for everybody (for balance); DX10+ not supported
    • Flashbangs behave like in 1.6 – if you face away, you aren’t blinded for very long
    • Classic weapons return, but have been changed / rebalanced
    • New shotgun
    • New taser melee weapon
    • New heavy machine gun rifle
    • New pistols
    • Models and hitbox sizes slighty reduced from CS: Source
    • Valve wants to support cross-platform play (if permitted by Sony / Microsoft)
    Confirmed Maps:
    • de_dust2
    • de_dust – layout significantly changed (new paths)
    • de_aztec – minor changes to layout
    • de_nuke – some layout changes
    • de_inferno – some layout changes
    • de_train
    • cs_ hostage maps confirmed, but unknown which will be returning

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive gets first trailer, details
Cross-platform play, mouse and keyboard support confirmed

Valve has released the first trailer and a few details for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the latest iteration of its massively popular multiplayer shooter.

Unlike previous Counter-Strike games, Global Offensive is being developed simultaneously for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. According to early reports it'll launch with at least seven maps, accommodating the game's trademark bomb defusal and hostage rescue modes.

Maps included in the trailer are dust, Dust2, Aztec, Nuke, inferno, Italy and Office. As well as the classic arsenal of weaponry CS: GO will feature a few new additions including a decoy grenade and a Molotov cocktail, which is shown in the trailer.

The trailer also reveals cross-platform play as well as mouse and keyboard support for PS3 players. Check out the trailer below to see it in action.
