Thread: BSOD on WINDOWS SERVER 2003 installation!

  1. #1

Default BSOD on WINDOWS SERVER 2003 installation!

While trying to install Win server 2003 on a clone server - got BSOD twice!
Server has XEON processor, 8gb ram (ddr3) and Intel s3420gp server board. HDDs are put in RAID 1 config. Nothing on the HDD yet.

I got the - Windows server 2003 Enterprise Edition with SP2; bootable disc
    Released by - MACROSYS
    No serial key required.

After booting it goes to an install menu. After choosing Win server 2003 (x64), it loads the files but then at - WINDOWS IS STARTING UP -- BSOD! Twice!
Tried with the (x86) version - same.
Was pissed as this indicates hardware/driver incompatibility.

Then tried with evaluation copy of WIN SERVER 2008 R2 - and wow -- started installing like a bullet!

Is it hardware issues or is it the disc I got?

I will just continue this post to list my experiences so that other ppl facing this may get some guidance.

As per Winter brotha's suggestion, I got myself yet another Win Server 2003 CD, battling the jams, ppl, water, fallen trees - and the result was the same. BSOD on initialising screen after the basic files have been installed.

So, it got me thinking. See the server HDDs have been put in RAID 1 config and Win Serv 2003 is a very old mother. My guess was I was not doing sth right with the RAID drivers. I got the drivers out of the mobo CD but how do I get the Win Serv 2003 installation to recognize them?

Thru USB - that did not seem to work. WS2003 was not recognizing any mass storage - was only asking for floppy drive. The server DID NOT have a floppy drive - bwaaaaaaaah! (who uses them nowadays right?).

Ok - after quite a bit of research, I came across the topic INSTALLING WIN SERV 2003 WITHOUT FLOPPY SCSI SLIPSTREAM. Here is the link I found really useful.
    http://www.west-wind.com/weblog/posts/2005/Nov/16/Installing-Windows-with-Additional-Drivers-and-no-Floppy-drive

    1) U
sing a tool called nlite - I created an *.iso file of the WS2003 installation CD.
    2) Then using the nlite again, I edited the *.iso file to include the WS2003 x64 RAID drivers from the mobo cd. New *.iso created.
    3) Now I burned the new *.iso to a CD/DVD.
    4) Used that to boot server normally and boom -- it is installing without any BSOD.

    Have fun folks!

    Raid drivers are usually loaded by the system itself, unless we're talking custom raid (Adaptec/3ware and the like). Didn't know what config you were running, sorry ;;
