HD through HDMI only with new model, according to retailer leak
The latest PS3 model replacing the current 160GB SKU will only transmit HD pictures through a HDMI cable.
That's according to a letter apparently sent out to retailers by Sony, and passed on to Kotaku, that shows Sony explaining that the new PS3 SKU will no longer be able to transmit high definition images via component cables
While previous PS3 models, predictably, won't be updated to accommodate the change, all future SKUs will also require an HDMI cable if you want to play in high def.
The news will possibly come as a disappointment to owners of older HDTVs which don't include HDMI ports, but all we'll say is get yourself down the shops and buy a new telly. Your current one is old.
No other details on the new PS3 model are available at the moment. A new lighter, greener SKU was announced for Japan last month but Sony UK said it was "relevant for Japan only at this time."
