Dishonored to be 12-14 hours long

The by now surely surgically joined co-creative directors of Dishonoured, Harvey Smith and Raphael Colantonio have spoken (in unison?), to answer that all important question: how long will the game be?In a Bethblog Q&A Smith-tonio explained, “Play-style matters a lot”. Very direct players will probably get through the game in 12 or 14 hours. Explorers who eavesdrop a lot will take twice as long.

They also confirmed that there will be, “six major active powers and four passive powers as well as weapons, gadgets and 40 bone charms that grant small supernatural perks”. Apparently it will be impossible to get all the charms in one playthrough. The active powers require mana which will always reacharge just enough for basic abilities like the teleporting Blink and Dark Vison. If you want more you’ll have to use potions to refill your meter.

Dishonored on PC “has its own different interface,” PC standards are “a religion”

Bad ports hurt, especially when the game getting the shoddy treatment is otherwise good. Dishonored might be quite good, so a little before E3 I asked co-designers Raphaël Colantonio and Harvey Smith — who have a great deal of PC development experience — how much attention is being paid to PC optimization.

Their response wasn’t especially detailed, but it does inspire optimism.
“Our background is very PC for sure,” said Colantonio. “And now in this game we have a mix of strong console players and fans, and also hardcore PC people. So both sides are very influential, and in the end, yes, the PC has its own different interface.

“It’s a very cool mix of culture, as Raph was saying,” continued Smith. “At either location [Lyon and Austin] you’ll have people that are like, super hardcore strong about these PC standards. Obviously with the long legacy we’ve had, it’s a religion.”Smith went on to say that “the same is true for the PS3 and the Xbox,” and that the studio’s philosophy is to “step back” and let those who are passionate about one platform influence development there. Achievements, for example, are left to the Xbox evangelists on staff. If PC standards are truly a “religion” at Arkane Studios, we may be served well, but we haven’t yet verified it with our eyeballs.

Dishonored to do right by its multiple platforms

Dishonored dev, Arkane Studios, has implemented system-specific tweaks to ensure that whatever your choice of platform for its stealth-action assassination title, that platform will feel like home.

Arkane Studios has insisted that it has optimised controls, feedback and configuration options for each of the PC, 360 and PS3 versions of its upcoming first-person action title, Dishonored.

Discrepancies in visual feedback, control options or UI are often the bane of a gamer’s life when trying to play a multi-platform title on anything other than the lead platform. This particularly applies to differences between console and PC versions of games.

However, in an interview with AusGamers, Arkane’s co-creative director Harvey Smith assured that won’t be the case with Dishonored, “one of the great things about Arkane, is that we have different factions on the team that represent each of the platforms,” he said.

“So we have fanatical Xbox guys that want to make sure their Achievements are handled correctly; we have a lot of old-school PC guys that want to make sure that there’s no mouse-acceleration forced on you, and you can turn off parts of the HUD, and that the key-bindings are right. And also on the PC of course, you can run at 60 frames a second, which is pretty sweet.

“And then we have PS3 guys as well that are, like, fanatical for their platform and make sure the trophies are handled correctly and it performs well on the PS3 and all that. So that’s one of the good things about the team.”

Arkane Studios’ boss, Raphael Colantonio, was also recently quoted as saying that the PC version has its own interface.

Further along in the interview, Smith reiterated the notion that Dishonored’s game systems have been designed to allow for emergent, experimental play thanks to the protagonist’s myriad powers, which can result in player’s doing things that the developer hadn’t deliberately built into the game.

Quoting an example from a recent demo showing, Smith illustrated, “we jumped off the building and on the way down, before hitting the ground, possessed this woman standing down there, which broke the fall by moving into her body. So that’s a good example, and we didn’t plan for that either.”

He quickly followed up with another example:
“But we have recently seen people doing things where: the Tallboys are the guards on stilts that are the city watch and dealing with the infected — they’re walking around on stilts — and we’ve seen people blink-teleport into the air over them, and then as they fall onto the tallboy, initiate the drop assassination. So you can actually drop assassinate the tallboys, which is fantastic.”

Dishonored launches in October for PC, PS3 and 360.

Arkane provides a look at Dishonored’s UI options

Those interested in the look of the UI and the options available in Arkane Studios’ Dishonored, should know there will be a full slate of interface options you’ll be able to enable and disable individually in all versions of the game with some PC-specific features included as well.

In addition to general gameplay options, there will also be multiple options, such as the crosshair style as well as the Health/Mana gauges and many other options.

In the screenshots below, you’ll notice: options where the interface is fully enabled; stance icons that change when in stealth mode; an icon pointing to the next objective, context-sensitive icons for when you approach enemies, doors and other objects you can interact with; health and mana status; and currently equipped power or gadget. You’ll also notice how it looks with the UI elements disabled.

The PC-specific “shortcut” bar appears when you hit one of the shortcut buttons and will fade out quickly, so you will have a more familiar interface to “select your powers and gadgets.”

You’ll still have the option to use the standard Quick Access Wheel, which defaults to “mouse wheel click” on PC and the game also supports a gamepad.

Here’s a list of UI options available which are not depicted in the screenshots:

    • The FOV slider for changing your field of view.
    • Controller and mouse sensitivity options, as well as four different options related to auto aim strength and aim assist.
    • The mouse smoothing/acceleration slider and enable/disable options. (PC only).
    • Graphics options for the full spectrum of monitor resolutions, anti-aliasing, and various other graphical toggles. (PC only).

Hit up the Bethesda Blog for more.

Dishonored is slated for release on October 9 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
