Steve Jobs Will Reveal Apple iCloud, iOS 5 on June 6
Apple today said Steve Jobs will deliver the opening keynote at the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 6. On the docket: the next-generation versions of Apple's software platforms, namely iOS 5, Mac OS X Lion, and the until-now mysterious cloud service, officially called iCloud.
Apple revealed its plans in a press release issued this morning. The advance notice is somewhat out of character for the company, which typically prefers to keep the specifics of its announcements under lock and key until the event itself. It's likely Apple saw the speculation around the next version of the iPhone, which has traditionally been unveiled this time of year for a summer release, and decided to get ahead of those expectations lest anticipation for "iPhone 5" overshadow the software and services it wants to highlight.
Unconfirmed reports appear to indicate iPhone 5 won't be revealed until late summer, and won't be in stores until fall.
The most interesting part of Apple's announcement today is the confirmation of iCloud, which until now has been the subject of speculation ever since Apple acquired cloud-music service Lala in 2009. After Apple obtained the domain icloud.com and competitors like Amazon and Google began rolling out cloud services of their own, the rumors got even more prevalent. The latest is that Apple is very close to finalizing plans for iCloud that would allow consumers to mirror their music libraries online for playback anywhere, on any PC or iOS device.
Mac OS X Lion (version 10.7) is the eighth major release of of the OS X operating system. It was first revealed last fall at Apple's "Back to the Mac" event, and many of its new features borrow heavily from iOS and will likely be the first OS update distributed by the Mac App Store. As for iOS 5, the keynote will likely preview the new verion of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch OS for developers, with a consumer rollout presumably happening when the iPhone 5 is available for sale.
The WWC keynote is scheduled for 10 a.m. Pacific Time (1 p.m. Eastern) on Monday, June 6. PCMag will be all over it, so be sure to stay tuned to our coverage.
