ASuS launching a new monster
Asus will launch Mars II graphics card behemoth with dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 580s at Computex
If the GeForce GTX 590 graphics card, which combines two GPUs on a single card, just isn’t enough for Nvidia fanboys, Asus is riding to the rescue with its forthcoming Mars II monster unit. Reportedly set to launch next month at Computex, the card will likewise fuse two GF110 GPUs to compete against AMD’s dual-GPU Radeon HD 6990.
We don’t know much about the Mars II, though a leaked slide pictured above (via VR-Zone) promises 3GB of GDDR5 memory and performance tweaks and cooling features galore. It will need the GPU Tweak UI and Super Alloy Power technology, because while the GTX 590 was cooler and quieter than the Radeon HD 6990, reviewers (see here for one example) did not find that it outperformed AMD’s competitor in all benchmarks.
What we don’t know includes the core clock speed for all of those CUDA cores as well as the graphics memory clock speed. Asus may also decide to demonstrate how much overclocking you can hope to get out of Mars II. So if you’re looking to pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars for your next graphics card, you may want to wait to see what the Mars II is capable of before ponying up for a GTX 590 or Radeon HD 6990.
