Default Sony: PlayStation 4 development 'already underway' :)

Work on the "future platform" incurred in company's FY costs

Sony has confirmed that it has already begun development on PlayStation 4.

The company's EVP and chief financial officer Masaru Kato told a conference call today that work on the system is "already underway".

He revealed that production resource was factored into costs for the company's full year financial results, which were released yesterday.

"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life," he said.

"But this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product, I cannot discuss - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."

The head of Sony's global games development team, Shuhei Yoshida, said last year that the firm expects Microsoft and Nintendo to launch their 'next-gen' home systems before the new PlayStation arrives on the market.

"Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move," he said. "Or, because Nintendo's approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware - Wii doesn't even support HD resolution - so they might be the first to move.

"Probably we should watch these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan."

PlayStation 3 launched in Japan and the US in November 2006, but didn't reach Europe until March the following year. According to Sony, the system has sold over 50 million units to date.

Nintendo's Wii hit shelves in the same month in the US. Nintendo has confirmed that it will unveil its new home console - reportedly dubbed 'Project Cafe' - at E3 in two weeks' time.

Well news about PS 4 , WII 2 , what about xbox 720 :/ , i mean there was a rumour but nothing was confirmed by MS..

well bro with the release of kinect i guess it's gonna take time, but they should release a console soon, cus having 3 disc xbox 360 games isn't always right..but the people in power doesn't care about it cus 1 disc or 10 disc, they are getting the same thing by paying $60 .. my bet is before 2013 we ain't seeing a new ps4 or an new xbox 720 ..
both of them still has lot of potential which is yet to be exploited..more news below[COLOR="Silver"]

Ubisoft wants next-gen consoles 'sooner rather than later'

Ubisoft UK boss Rob Cooper has said he'd like to see Sony and Microsoft release next-gen consoles "sooner rather than later".

Speaking to MCV, the exec said: "... There have been tonnes of technological advances since the last round of consoles was released, and we'd love to see those advances included in new consoles sooner rather than later.

"That's because the sooner we have the next generation of consoles to build on, the sooner we can leverage those advances to create the next generation of video games."

Cooper added: "The peripherals and the updates to the existing generation have been great, but it's typically new consoles that really spark innovation from publishers and the demand from customers."

Nintendo plans to show off its new console at E3 next month, and Microsoft is also reportedly considering a new Xbox reveal at the show. Sony said in March it's far too early to begin talking about the technology it'll use for PS4.

ps3 still has some good 3-4 years juice left in it, besides the amount of dough sony lost on PSN security breach, sony wud definitely postpone any plan of ps4 to make up for the cost and also to improve ps4's security, my bet is sumtime near 2014

seems like money won't be an issue! as sony claims PS4 will be cheaper to built than PS3

PlayStation 4 cheaper to make than PS3 - Sony

It is no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment"

Sony confirmed this week that it has already begun PlayStation 4 development, but has said that post-PS3 hardware projects won't be granted the same level of investment as the costly current-gen console.

The company spent many, many millions designing the PS3's Cell processor and its own semi conductor facilities, and Sony chief financial officer Masaru Kato told investors (via Andriasang): "It is no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment like that of the PS3."

"Significant cost reductions" of PS3 hardware were yesterday cited as a major factor in the PlayStation business swinging to a profit in the financial year ended in March.

Kato said the main factor in the PlayStation division's losses in prior years had been the big difference in the PS3's retail price and the cost to manufacture the system.

Sony Won't Make Massive Investment in PS4

Posted May 27, 2011 by James Brightman

Sony's PS3 was pretty slow out of the gate with its $599 price tag, but Sony had little choice in terms of pricing due to the heavy costs surrounding Blu-ray and the Cell processor. The R&D and manufacturing took its toll on the company's bottom line and only now is the PlayStation division finally reaping some profits.
Sony this week confirmed the obvious: PlayStation 4 is coming, and indeed work has already started on the new hardware. However, this time around, the company has vowed not to make the same mistake twice; Sony claims it will not invest as heavily in a PS4 the way it did with the PS3.
Sony CFO Masaru Kato commented, "It is no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment like that of the PS3."
That's all well and good, but we have to wonder what the implications of such a statement will be. How will this affect the final hardware design of PS3? Will it be underpowered compared to the next Xbox? You can be sure that Microsoft will make the financial investment needed to create an absolute beast of a console.

Sony Banking On New Super Fast Cell Processor For PS4

Sony who announced a $3 Billion plus loss last week is pinning their future, on a brand new processor which some are speculating will lead to a new Playstation 4.

What we have been told is that Sony is working on a very fast processor which is being developed with IBM, who was the original architect with Sony and Toshiba of the Cell processor, which has been used by both Sony and Microsoft to power their gaming processors for nearly 10 years.

IBM sources claim that the new multi core PowerPC processor, which Big Blue, has spent several years developing is now part of a joint development project with the Japanese Company.

Sony recently moved to buy back the Toshiba Cell factory in Nagasaki for $600 million with some tipping that this will be used to manufacture the processor for both Sony Toshiba and IBM devices.

The new 32nm Cell processor is tipped to be capable of up to 16 SPEs which is twice as fast as the current Cell processor according to IBM leaks.

Japanese sources claim that Sony is gearing up to manufacture the Cell processor in bulk with some analysts tipping that the new processor will also appear in Sony notebooks and built into new Sony Bravia TV's.

Intel sources have said that they are also working on a new processor that will be ideal for future gaming consoles as well as for use in devices that are both gaming console and media hubs.
