Sony Sells Just Over 14 Million PS3 In A Year
Sony has reported its financial info for the past fiscal year, and although it reported a 260 billion yen loss for the year due to the tsunami and deferred tax on assets, things were looking pretty good for Sony Computer Entertainment.
Sony's Networked Products & Services division, which houses Sony Computer Entertainment – was one of two areas of the company where sales were not down (the other being the HDTV/Electronics division). NP&S reported 35.6 billlion yen (approximately $434 million) in profit.
14.3 million PlayStation 3s were sold in fiscal year 2011, down slightly from the projected 15 million, but up from last year's figure of 13 million. The division also benefited from lowered production costs of the system. Sales of PSPs and PS2s were both down from last year. The PSP sold eight million units (down from 9.9 million) and the PS2 sold 6.4 million (down from 7.3 million).
Software was a winner for the division, with 147.9 million PS3 games sold (up from 115.6 million previously) and 46.6 million in PSP software sales (up from 44.4 million). PS2 software sales took a dive from 35.7 million to 16.4 million.
Sony has previously stated that it expects to take a 14 billion yen (~$170 million) hit for the recent PSN security breach, but that total won't be racked up until the end of fiscal year 2012 (which ends on March 31, 2012).
