    Can anyone tell me why GFlops i5 2500k is greater than 17 2600k?




    I think 17 2600k should be higher?

    Basically what HT does is run 2 simultaneous threads in 1 core, if the software is not coded properly for HT then sometimes it can result in performance decrease.

    It works something like this. HT gives a performance boost when there are flaws in the code in an application (as with every general purpose application e.g Microsoft Word). It basically keeps the execution engines fed with data while other things are being done (fetch, etc).

    Look at it this way. Suppose a general application only utilises 2/5 of the execution engines in sandy bridge. What HT will try to do is fetch another thread into the pipeline in order to utilise the execution engines better in order to extract more performance out of one thread. This works fine for general applications since they aren't coded to perfectly utilise the ALU/AGU/FP etc perfectly and hence there is room for improvement in each thread by HT.

    However, a perfectly coded application such as Linpack stresses the CPU 100% and utilises all the execution engines (ALU, AGU, FP etc) already, so there are no idle resources and execution engines to feed data more. HT will try to fetch more data, but the execution engines are already busy! This results in more latency, stalled threads etc..basically slower performance, which is why servers check properly if HT increases or decreases performance before using the processors and turn them on/off accordingly.

    This is a simplistic way of looking at it
