    Default Alan Wake 2

A recent job listing on Gamasutra has piqued the interest of gamers hoping for a sequel to last year’s psychological thriller, ‘Alan Wake.’

When the Xbox 360 was first announced in 2005, gamers bore witness to some amazing displays of technology. One of the games that piqued the interest of more than a few people was Alan Wake. Promising a large focus on story and a creepy atmosphere, gamers waited in anticipation. The wait though, took a bit longer than most would have expected.

After seemingly dropping off the face of the gaming world, Alan Wake reappeared a few years later, releasing in 2010. While the long wait may have driven some gamers away, that didn’t stop the game from taking home the Game Rant 2010 Video Game Award for Best Story. Even after release, developer Remedy Entertainment kept the game’s narrative from getting stale with the release of multiple chapters of DLC, including The Writer and The Signal.

Following the game’s success, the release of a sequel seems like the only logical move for Remedy Entertainment, and it appears as if an announcement could be on its way in the future. Last year, Remedy put out a notice that they were hiring for the position of “senior producer” for a new “AAA” title. While nothing has come of this, aside from talk of Alan Wake 2′s plot and the news that the sequel is going to be “very weird,” there has yet to be any sort of official announcement regarding a sequel so far.

This announcement could be coming closer though, as a new listing on Gamasutra mirrors the earlier job posting, but this time is looking for a “senior level designer.” While this job listing could be for anything, there is still the strong possibility that the team is hard at work on a sequel to 2010′s hit. There’s no doubt that this would be great news for gamers who have been waiting in anticipation. With games focusing less and less on creating a living, breathing world and crafting a strong narrative to draw gamers in, a return to Bright Falls would be just what the industry needs.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remedy Entertainment is developing a new facial animation technology that will rival that of Team Bondi’s crime drama. Will ‘Alan Wake 2′ look just as good as ‘L.A. Noire’?

Next month gamers will be able to get their hands on one of the most anticipated titles the year, L.A. Noire. Rockstar Games’ latest Team Bondi-developed title will not only feature the quality storytelling that the company’s properties have become known for, but the most realistic facial animations ever seen in a video game. This week Remedy Entertainment, developers of last year’s Alan Wake claim they have new technology in the works which could bring Alan Wake 2 visuals that overshadow those used in L.A. Noire.

The technology behind Remedy‘s new facial animation software was created by John Root, lead animator at the studio. Root has held many lead roles with other major developers including Epic Games and Disney, so he knows a thing or two about animating.

Instead of manually animating facial features, this new technology allows the animators to capture an actor’s face in real time, and finely tune the features using installed sliders, thus streamlining the process and reducing errors.

Root claims that this new tech is a lot more accurate than the standard motion capture technology being used in the industry, already proving to be accurate to within 0.5 millimeters on one of Remedy’s future projects. It wasn’t stated if this future project was in fact Alan Wake 2, though it would be foolish not to use it for the sequel.

Edge got a look at the tech in action, which is already producing some impressive results. But aside from realistic expressions, Root is setting his sights on getting below the skin, and assessing how blood flow and skin color changes with facial movements. If this is the work of just a single studio, then the next few years could be a very interesting hike through the uncanny valley.

While the first Alan Wake was a solid title, the facial animations left a lot of room for improvement, which is probably why Remedy is developing this new technology. From the latest L.A. Noire trailer, it’s obvious that the game is going to look amazing, with facial animations so accurate that players will have to utilize them to solve crimes in the game.

The in-depth look at L.A. Noire‘s technology showed just how much Team Bondi is blazing a trail for the game industry at large, so Remedy will have some serious work ahead of them to back up their claims. But if the new techology is as good as they say, then the future of the Alan Wake franchise just got a lot brighter.

There’s no official word on when Alan Wake 2 will be released, though a recent job posting indicates that the title is in development. Until then gamers can pick up L.A. Noire when it hits stores on May 17th for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Huh, it seems it could actually be a PC port, could it finally be? I have my fingers crossed

A lengthy development cycle and lower than expected sales put an Alan Wake sequel in doubt. But Finland-based Remedy Entertainment has cryptically confirmed that the next Alan Wake game is now being worked on, only it's not Alan Wake 2. Confused? So are we.

Responding to a rumor report on Joystiq that pointed to an artist's resume as proof Alan Wake 2 is on the way, Remedy's Oskari Hakkinen made the official confirmation, with a bit of confusing clarification.

"Fans of the franchise will be excited to learn that, yes, more Wake is coming!" Hakkinen told Joystiq. "But to be absolutely certain to avoid confusion, this next Wake installment will not be Alan Wake 2. But neither will it be DLC. The rest we're saving for our official announcement when we'll actually SHOW YOU."

"We are really excited about this project which a slice of our team has been working on for the last months," Hakkinen continued. "It's something that'll definitely give more to the Wake fans out there, but just as importantly, this installment will also give an opportunity for players who aren't familiar with the franchise to finally jump on board."

Hakkinen did not reveal platforms, but he did tell Joystiq the next Alan Wake should be set to ship in the fall.
