I guess it is alright. My 5750, which is somewhat weaker than yours, idles at 42C, and at 100% load, temperatures are slightly above 65C. The 48xx series cards produce more heat, so I guess it is alright.

If 8800gt can produce 75C+ then 4870 cant be like th8 is not a good idea.Every gpu has a factory built in temp when it will blow out.So reviews r all over for it.But room temp is also major cz to look out.

Don't worry, the 4000 series runs hot. My 4890 crossed 80-85C frequently, never down throttled, no warning, and the card ran fine.

    ---------- Post added at 20:43 ---------- Previous post was at 20:42 ----------

Oh and it might not review temps cause they might have better air cooling and lower room temparatures. Dont worry your temps are fine.

Ya don't worry about it, I was in the same boat as you when I first saw my temps. Its actually even 'normal' for current cards as well. The GTX460 is a much smaller card than the HD4890, yet it runs almost just as hot on load.

I still gotta few OEM (nVIDIA manufactured) 8800GT/8800GTS/8800GTX/8800Ultra and 9800GT cards laying around, all of them gets around 85 C When running furmark, so no biggey. Crank up the fan speed a little from the overdrive section in ATI Control Panel if you're not satisfied, but your temperature is good considering the card you've, I've an OEM 4870 1GB that hits the 82 C mark often, so if I were you, I wouldn't worry too much.

I usually use gpu z for monitoring gpu temps, the gpu usage graphs and etc. help, and for osd frame count I keep fraps minimized on system tray, I guess the temperature monitoring software/gadgets differ from person to person because of personal preferences.

I actually use MSI afterburner for almost everything, that gadget I mentioned is just there so that I don't have to maximize MSI AB everytime. FPS count doesn't bother me much until its a new game. I use the FPS counter to determine my ingame graphics settings, no use for it after that.

If you haven't done so recently, try getting the dust off the heatsink and fan. My Radeon 5770 was hitting 85C and giving it a good clean brought the temperatures down to 75 at full load.
