    as far as i know with my very very little knowledge on programming, visual basic is not for compiling c/cpp codes rather it use for MS dot net/ win32 gui programming ... if u're already instal visual studio'06 then run visual c++ ... i'm running both visual studio'06 and codeblock just fine in win7 ... make sure the version of the codeblock must be the latest one /*10.something*/ because previous versions don't bundled with any compiler which precisely make those versions are work like a editor, not a IDE ...
    about books, u can try " let us C by yashwant kanetkar " for C and "Programming in ANSI C by balagurusamy " but if u're complete novice then start with let us C since balagurusamy's book is a bit for advance users,IMO ...
    for cpp, kanetkar also have a book regarding cpp named " let us C++ by yashwant kanetkar " ... there is another great book for cpp by herbert schildt named "teach yoreself c++ " ... sorry, can't provide exact links of any of these but i'm pretty sure u may find almost all of these on http://library.nu or alternatively, instead of pdf, go to nilkhet and grab one of these paper book and begin u're journey of core programming ...

    Codeblocks runs in Win7. I used with my 64bit win7 without anyproblem.
    May be its problem with your codeblocks.
    Download the latest codeblocks.

    VS6 also works with win7 but i suggest move to MS VS 2008 or 2010

    edit: not sure about visual basic! didn't work that for long! i thought u wanted for c++ complier..

    For C++ books I would refer 2 books.

    1. Let Us C
    2. Teach yourself C++
