Every connection is different hence you need to test around with a few settings for optimal experience. Please remember that if you have loss on the server, then you cannot use the ‘best’ settings, it’ll just hamper your game, and annoy others.
Of course you need to first learn how to play to know which setting is ideal. You cannot spray from a mile away and then wonder why you didn’t hit the targets, and of course you cannot call them laggers but they get to call you noob.
Here are some settings that you need to tweak:
rate XX000 (minimum 35000)
cl_interp (0.010 – 0.030)
cl_interp_ratio (1-2; use higher values if you have loss/choke/high ping)
: There are some recommended settings for a few ISPs, you can see them after you join ZX, start off with those and proceed from there.
How To Set Your Interp:
This is explained beautifully by J3Di (ZBlock developer):
You're concerned with 'area 9
' the interpolation graph. (Check the attached image below)
Ideally you want that area all to be blue
but with as little
an interp value as possible.
Type net_graph 4
in the console and set your cl_interp to 0.06 and work down until you get to 0.015. Observe the graph until you start to get bits of red
instead of blue lines.
This means your client is extrapolating frames and in that case animations will likely jitter and players might not appear in their exact position (but _very_ close). Then you just increase your interp a step so you're back to all blue, or nearly all blue
. A tiny amount of red isn't that bad, but if it appears consistently your interp is too low.
I did some tests myself, and I get all blue with cl_interp 0.015. For further testing, I used some commands to fake lag loss etc. (net_fakelag /loss /jitter)
From my findings, users with loss will immediately see red bars if they have too low interps, so they must use a higher interp value.
Next I tested high pings but no loss. At first it seemed everything was ok, then suddenly when there were intense firefights, red bars started popping up. So again, use higher values.
Then the holy grail, downloading and playing. And no I did not fake loss or high ping when doing this. I got pings of 10 in game and 0 loss, download speed capped at 250kBps. (cnd's 56th filmfare awards
) And yes red bars
Note: Make sure you try with cl_interp_ratio 1 first. If too high a lerp is needed, then switch to cl_interp_ratio 2 and a lower cl_interp.
