Angry Birds Animated Series Moves Into Production :D
Suppress those groans and unclench those fists, because the stupidly-popular mobile physics-puzzler game Angry Birds is going to be transforming into an animated series. It was perhaps only just a matter of time, with downloads for the app reaching over 50 MILLION before the end of last year, and as we speak probably cresting somewhere in the high sixties. That's the sort of popularity that just screams "merchandise me!" at the top of its tiny lungs.
It is not clear if the animated series will be launched across the internet as well as television, or what the scope of the project is, but there's almost no doubt that this is essentially a license for Rovio, the game's creators, to print money. Says Rovio CEO Mikael Hed:
"We have been looking at that for quite a while, and that is definitely one of my personal big focus areas right now -- to work on broadcast content for 'Angry Birds,'
It was a completely new area for us; we had to get our bearings there, and a sense of how the whole market was,” he added. “That was the first part of the exercise, and now that we’ve done that, the next part is to move into production, and that’s where we are right now.”I'm not really sure I can see it picking off in Australia, although there might at least be a market on one of Foxtel's children's channels. Time will tell.
