    Default Dungeon Siege 3

    Obsidian unearthing Dungeon Siege 3

RPG sequel coming to PC, 360, and PS3 with an all-new cooperative multiplayer mode; original developer Gas Powered Games to provide additional support.

Dungeon Siege 3 is under development by Obsidian Entertainment, Square Enix announced today. The publisher did not provide a release date but did say that the role-playing game is set to feature an all-new cooperative multiplayer mode, a deep story, and customizable character classes. It will be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, marking the series' first outing on consoles. Original developer Gas Powered Games will provide additional support to Obsidian, with designer Chris Taylor serving as an adviser.

The game will once again be set in the kingdom of Ehb, where the balance of power between rival factions has fallen apart. Players will take on the role of a member of the disgraced protectors of the land, known as the 10th Legion. With the kingdom tearing itself apart, the Legion is tasked with rebuilding its numbers and restoring peace. There are also hints that the story will feature a morality system, with Square Enix saying that players will have "weighty decisions to make that will impact their alliances, enemies and the culmination of the story."

Developer Obsidian is not new to collaborations nor to the RPG genre. In 2003 it partnered with BioWare to develop Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, which was well received critically. It also developed Neverwinter Nights 2 and Alpha Protocol and is currently at work on Fallout: New Vegas with Bethesda.

Dungeon Siege 3 is the first outing for the series in more than five years. The last entry was Dungeon Siege II, which was released in 2005 to generally favourable reviews.

    Dungeon Siege 3 Announced

    Obsidian picks up another sequel.

Square Enix has announced that it will bring Dungeon Siege 3 to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, with developer Obsidian Entertainment at the helm. Original franchise creator Gas Powered Games will provide input, with Chris Taylor on as adviser.

Dungeon Siege 3 is said to "seamlessly blend intuitive action gameplay and a robust RPG system in an immersive world." The franchise will make its first appearance on consoles and will include a new co-op mode. You play as one of the disgraced protectors of the land of Ehb after the balance of power has fallen apart. Your job is to rebuild the Legion and save the day in grand fashion. Along the way you'll recruit companions and make decisions that shape alliances and affect the ultimate outcome of the story.

Chris Taylor offered the following comment on the news, "It's a great pleasure to collaborate with Obsidian. They are a very talented developer who really knows what it takes to build a deep and engaging RPG experience, and I can't think of a better group to continue the Dungeon Siege series."

Obsidian has recently finished work on Alpha Protocol and is currently developing Fallout: New Vegas. It has worked on several sequels to established franchises in the past, including Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2.

Okk... many thanks for the info...
As Squire Enix is the publisher and both Obsidian Evolves + Gas Powered Games are working as dev, I'm hoping something really good from it..

Obsidian is one hell of a RPG dev, IMO. Neverwinter Nights, New Vegas, Alpha Protocol (from it's core, though a crap one overally) were some blasts...

I have my fingers crossed on this, Obsidian is known for making buggy sequels like KotOR II, NWN2. Not to mention the overhyped **** that was Alpha protocol.

    Dungeon Siege 3 preview

Call it the new nerdcore: RPGs are big business. Dungeon Siege 3 is entering the cave-complex that Diablo, Dragon Age and Torchlight have called their own. What can it bring to the ornately carved game-table? A hefty weight of physical violence. Drop-in, drop-out cooperative dungeon crawling. Gorgeous new technology. And intricate business manoeuvring.

The private demo I saw was little more than a proof of concept. A dungeon, two heroes (a warrior and a wizard) and a steady stream of ugly baddies. The bads got knocked about like toys – the warrior slamming his shield into entire groups. It’s simple bash bash bash entertainment. The wizard fights by the warrior’s side – one is controlled with a gamepad, the other with a mouse and keyboard. Their abilities are complementary, the wizard slowing or freezing bigger enemies in place while the warrior carves a safe path through them.

The technology is impressive. The dungeon they’re fighting through is miles deep. You can see it spiralling down into the depths. Each little goblin that gets knocked off the ledge can be seen pinwheeling into the river below. This isn’t an off-the-shelf tech solution like the Unreal engine: this is developer Obsidian finally flexing their technical muscles.

And that’s the other weird surprise. Hold tight, this is complicated financial stuff. The original Dungeon Siege was developed and created by Gas Powered Games, led by Chris Taylor. The Dungeon Siege games and intellectual property were sold to Square Enix. The same Square Enix that created the Final Fantasy games, and then merged with UK publisher Eidos (themselves the owners of Deus Ex and Tomb Raider). Square Enix, in turn, have contracted out development of Dungeon Siege 3 to Obsidian, the team behind Knights of the Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, and in their former iteration, Planescape: Torment and Fallout.

Why is that surprising? Because Obsidian are all about story and lore and detailed moral consequences. The Dungeon Siege games were mostly about turning orcs into piles of guts, and overloading your pet donkey with loot.

Which is why when lead designer Nathan Chapman talked about “paying respect to the Dungeon Siege lore,” I had to stifle a giggle. The Dungeon Siege lore is what director Uwe Boll used to make a four hour epic. It’s not exactly Shakespeare. Expect slick cutscenes with Mass Effect style dialogue – they’re not going to hang about making you read pages of quest text. Unless they’re daft.

Being grumbly at this stage seems churlish. Obsidian have great tech, smart dynamics, and an ambition to create a fleshed out RPG. Success isn’t assured – but they’re already on the right track.

    E3 2010: Dungeon Siege 3 impressions

The Dungeon Siege series is beloved to many role-playing and hack'n'slash game fans -- so much so that the third game in the series gets a free pass toward being generic. On the other hand, if it does anything new or different, it runs the risk of angering fans who want more of the same.

What we're talking about: Dungeon Siege 3 (sometimes spelled Dungeon Siege III), a fantasy role-playing game where players choose a character class and ability set to level up through hack'n'slash'n'spellcast gameplay.

Where we saw it: Behind closed doors at Sqaure Enix's booth with half a dozen other games journalists. We all got to watch two developers try to talk about the game coherently while not dying during a boss fight.

    What you need to know:
There’s a bit of controversy around developer Obsidian taking over the franchise from original developer Gas Powered Games after publisher Square Enix bought the intellectual property. To keep the game true to its roots, Obsidian makes sure that Gas Powered’s Chris Taylor sees every milestone and has input on overarching decisions that play into the lore of Dungeon Siege.

Drop-in, drop-out cooperative play is a big talking point, though the entire game can be played solo. When working with two players, you can set up types of attack that take buildup time like an area affect spell and certain boss fights are a little easier. You can also revive a downed co-op buddy a la Left 4 Dead where you have to sand with them and hold down a button to resurrect them. Right now, the mode only works for two local players, no split screen.

The other big talking point is plot -- Obsidian plans to bring its signature story style to the game with branching dialogue options and a deep relationship-building system with companion characters. There’'s no dating sim, but you'll laugh when you see that the icon interface for dialogue sections is actually a tree with glowing branches that point to different conversation choices.

The camera pulls back naturally when in two-player mode like Diablo and fixes itself behind the main character in a traditional action game view when playing solo -- it sounds like you can edit the camera to default to either view regardless of which mode you're playing.

The game looks fabulous in more ways than one. In addition to using deferred lighting, the Onyx engine, and PhysX for better rag doll death animations, Dungeon Siege features "vista views" where you can actually see the whole of the game world from your character's vantage point on the map. It creates as a sense of adventure, being able to see the top of a mountain or a village in a valley off the distance and knowing that somehow you can get there if you take the right path.

Point in development cycle: Very, very alpha. They wouldn't let journalists touch it and it's not due out 'til 2011.

My take: Love it, want it. Wish there were a dating sim.

Dungeon Siege III Exclusive Hands-On Preview - Cooperative Play

We lay siege to a haunted house during our hands-on cooperative session with Dungeon Siege III.

When we last visited the world of Dungeon Siege III, we helped young Lucas Mont Barron escape the burning Mont Barron estate, adventured through the countryside, and rescued a supposed Archon, Anjali, from some cultists. Now, we're back in developer Obsidian Entertainment's action role-playing world. However, this time Lucas and Anjali are teaming up for some cooperative gameplay as we go hands-on to investigate the spooky Gunderic Manor.

Once again, we stepped into the young adventurer's shoes. Adept with a sword and shield, Lucas is a strong melee fighter who excels at powerful blows against single targets. Our co-op companion was Anjali, a fiery mage with some crowd-control abilities. Our mission was to help Leona, a witch looking to set up shop in the dilapidated Gunderic Manor. We agreed to investigate the manor for her and clear out any malcontents (or homeless people) we found within it.

The quest started out easily enough. The manor seemed to be deserted until we encountered Alise Gunderic, one of the manor's former inhabitants. Specifically, we encountered the ghost of Alise Gunderic, who pleaded with us to destroy the Heart of Nagog. According to her, this item was the one thing binding her soul to the mortal realm. Having only just met her, we decided to trust her completely and agreed to help without another word.

All of the gargoyles and skeletons outside must have overheard our conversation because after we exited the room, they all sprang to life and attacked. What a mistake on their part. It didn't take us long to fall back into the easy rhythm of Dungeon Siege III's combat. Our role was simple: Get in front of the enemies and dish out as much hurt as possible. If we got swarmed by their numbers, a shield bash from the sword-and-shield stance would temporally stun a few. And if some pesky ranged units attacked from a distance, the broadsword stance's blade dash ability would run them over with ease.

For the most part, it was just a lot of tapping the attack button and watching the numbers fly. This basic pleasure, a staple in the action role-playing genre, is not lost here. For all our frantic sword swinging (and accidental dodge rolling), it was Anjali's "aura of immolation" ability that did most of the work. On command, she could conjure a pool of fire that would heal allies and damage enemies. Combined with the stunning power of Lucas' shield bash, we could trap our foes in flames and finish them off with steel.

Once we got some experience under our belt, we were able to level up these abilities. Each ability is divided up into two styles for you to improve, so you can choose to either focus on one, or go with a combination of both. For instance, aura of immolation can be improved with "fiery presence" (which deals more damage to enemies) or "cauterize" (which provides better healing to allies). Our extremely useful blade dash could be improved with "lightning precision" (which improves critical hit chance) or "hemorrhage" (which deals more damage over time).

With the enemies slain, we took a break to read up on the history of the manor. OK, maybe we just skimmed it. There was something about Lord Gunderic and the occult, as well as a secret password for his underground dungeon. However, before we could get to this dungeon, we had to get past a talking door--and an arrogant one at that. We already knew the password it wanted, but we decided to do things the hard way. One after the other, our two-character party bombarded the door with a series of off-the-wall guesses. After we made several failed attempts at guessing the answer, the door took pity on us, and it let us pass. This bullheaded feat earned us the "trial-and-error" achievement, as well as a small stamina boost to the entire party.

In the dungeon below, we stumbled upon another pack of pesky cultists, who were busy summoning some kind of ungodly monster. Just as they were finishing their ritual, we dropped in and squared off in a mini-boss encounter with a mire hulk horror. Acting on heroic impulse, we blade-dashed Lucas right into the thick of it only to get blown to pieces under the combined strength of our two foes (alone, Anjali didn't fare much better). A reload later, we devised a plan to better tackle this situation. Lucas would hit the cultists on the periphery first, while Anjali would keep the hulking horror distracted with a barrage of offensive magic.

Working together, we bested the beast and headed into the library beyond. Lo and behold, our adventuring duo found the Heart of Nagog, which was an ornate canister exuding green smoke. Blindly following the ghost's instructions and disregarding Anjali's suggestions for further research, we smashed that ¤¤¤¤¤¤ right then and there. This didn't have any immediate ramifications, but when we inevitably encountered Lord Gunderic, he thanked us for destroying the item and subsequently increasing his power. Whoops.

After the battle, Alise Gunderic materialized out of nowhere and gave us a heartfelt "thank you" for our assistance, which made the whole thing worthwhile. Or something. Leona moved in shortly thereafter, but we assured her that we would be back to reclaim this keep once we finished rebuilding the Legion. According to Lucas, it was once Legion property, but as it turns out, we were just being jerks on that one. You can be a jerk too, if you want, in Dungeon Siege III for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on May 31.
