Default Indian companies show interest in bandwidth

Dhaka, Jan 15 (bdnews24.com) — Indian telecom giants TATA Communications and Bharti Airtel have shown keen interest in entering into the bandwidth business in Bangladesh.

The post and telecommunication ministry has invited expression of interest to bid for a first terrestrial internet cable line and second submarine cable system from the private sector entrepreneurs.

The planned route of the terrestrial cable connection will be through Meherpur-Jessore-Kolkata and unlike the submarine cable line this connection would be constructed over the ground.

This system would be an alternative avenue for the existing submarine cable connection.

"This would end monopoly of the Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company (BSCCL) and bandwidth cost would come down," said Monwar Hossain, managing director of state-owned BSCCL, which is the sole company providing internet connectivity through submarine cable.

"Construction of the terrestrial cable system would be cheaper and less time-consuming than the submarine cable system," Monwar told bdnews24.com.

According to the sources at the telecommunication ministry, TATA Communication and Airtel have already shown keen interest in getting the license for the terrestrial cable connection.

Of late, both Indian companies have taken aggressive expansion strategy in Asia and other parts of the world.

Last year Airtel bought 70 percent stake of Warid Telecom and in December, 2010, renamed the company as Airtel Bangladesh Ltd.

Bharti Airtel Limited has operations in 19 countries across Asia and Africa.
