Default Antec PSUs Achieve Lowest Failure Rate: Study

Antec, Inc., the global leader in high-performance computer components and accessories for the gaming, PC upgrade and Do-It-Yourself markets, has again achieved the lowest failure return rate for its power supply units (PSUs), based on the release of an independent comparative study on PSU failure return rates from Hardware.fr. The study, carried out by Hardware.fr, a leading French web site dedicated to providing the latest independent hardware information for consumers, placed Antec in the forefront of the competition for achieving the lowest overall failure rates of power supplies with consumers.

The comparison study utilized a calculation base of the number of power supplies sold between October 1, 2009 and April 1, 2010. The study parameters required the PSUs to have been active for six months to one year, and the failure rates of the PSUs measured were taken from a major French e-tailer. The statistics “per brand” were based on a minimum of 500 PSUs sold and the statistics “per model” were based on a minimum of 100 PSUs sold. For statistics “per brand”, Antec earned a rating of 0.61 percent, securing its number one spot for having the lowest rate of power supply returns. The figure below displays the statistics “per brand” comparison results.

    • Antec 0.61%
    • CoolerMaster 1.10%
    • Fortron 1.29%
    • Thermaltake 1.39%
    • Corsair 1.68%
    • Enermax 2.47%
    • Seasonic 3.32%

“Antec keeps the head from the previous rankings, again with a very low failure rate”, says Marc Prieur, editor of Hardware.fr.

“Throughout its 25 year history, Antec has remained a consumer-centric company. For the third time a row, the results in this independent study underscore the reliability and value of Antec power supplies,” said Scott Richards, senior vice president, Antec. “We’re proud of this recognition because it is product related, not just a popularity vote. The results serve as a testament to our focus on quality. It is the only independent survey of its kind I know of anywhere in the world so it is relevant to consumers everywhere.”

    Motherboards

    - Gigabyte 2.33% (against 2.36%)
    - MSI 2.44% (against 2.54%)
    - ASUS 2.49% (against 3.05%)
    - ASRock 2.71% (against 2.21%)

The hierarchy is upset over the previous classification, ASRock from first to last place! Overall the numbers are against tighter. If one is particularly interested in the failure rate of motherboards based on P55 Express chipset, we obtain the following figures:

    - ASRock 1.52%
    - ASUS 2.07%
    - MSI 2.50%
    - Gigabyte 3.46%

This time, the ranking is reversed! Difficult in these conditions to draw any conclusion whatsoever. Some models have failure rates higher than 5% and should be avoided if you find them still in the shop:

    - 7.94%: ASRock P43ME
    - 7.80%: ASUS P5ND
    - 6.81%: Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H
    - 5.18%: ASUS M4A785TD EVO-M

Regarding power supplies from 500 to 550W, we obtain the following ranking:

    - 0.00%: Thermaltake 550W EVO Blue
    - 0.29%: Cooler Master Silent Pro M500
    - 0.50%: Antec EarthWatts EA500
    - 1.09%: Corsair VX550W
    - 1.10%: Fortron EVEREST 85PLUS 500
    - 1.38%: Cooler Master Real Power M520
    - 2.43%: Corsair HX520W
    - 2.67%: Fortron Blue Storm 2 500W
    - 2.73%: Thermaltake TR2 RX 550W
    - 3.57%: Antec TruePower 550 New

    MEMORY:
    - Kingston 0.30% (against 0.37%)
    - Crucial 0.93% (against 0.78%)
    - Corsair 1.41% (against 1.66%)
    - G. Skill 2.73% (against 1.53%)
    - OCZ 6.76% (against 2.76%)

Kingston confirmed its first place with a really low rate. G. Skill and OCZ are especially their failure rates increase, the latter reaching worrying figures!

    - 15.08%: Corsair Dominator 2x2 GB DDR2 PC8500 CL5 - TWIN2X4096-8500C5D
    - 11.28%: OCZ DDR2 PC2 Value2x1 GB-6400 - OCZ2V8002GK

    - 8.01%: G. Skill 2x2GB NT Series DDR3 PC3-10600 - F3-10600CL9D-4GBNT
    - 7.19%: OCZ Gold Edition 2x2GB DDR2 PC2-6400 - OCZ2G8004GK
    - 7.14%: G. Skill 2x2GB Ripjaws RM Series DDR3 PC3-10666 - F3-10666CL8D-4GBRM
    - 6.65%: Corsair XMS3 DDR3 PC10600 2x2GB CL9 - TW3X4G1333C9
    - 6.05%: OCZ DDR2 PC2 Value2x1 GB-5300 - K-OCZ26672048VDC
    - 5.88%: G. Skill 2x2GB HK Series DDR3 PC3-10600 - F3-10600CL8D-4GBHK
    - 5.65%: G. Skill 2x2GB Ripjaws HR Series DDR3 PC3-12800 - F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH
    - 5.52%: Corsair XMS2 DDR2 2x2GB PC8500 CL5 - TWIN2X4096-8500C5C
    - 5.16%: G. Skill 2x2GB DDR2 Standard Series PC2-6400 - F2-6400CL5D-4GBNT
    - 5.15%: Corsair XMS2 2x2GB DDR2 PC6400 CL5 - TWIN2X4096-6400C5C
    - 5.07%: Corsair PC8500 DDR2 CL5 Dominator2x1 GB - TWIN2X2048-8500C5D

Only two brands escape this classification, Kingston and Crucial. The worst result obtained by Crucial is 4.37% on Crucial Ballistix DDR2 PC8500 5-5-5-15 2x1 GB - Kingston BL2KIT12864AA106A obtained while in the worst case ... 2.53% on a strip of 256 MB SDRAM!

    Graphics cards

    - ASUS 0.93% (against 1.51%)
    - PNY 1.13% (against 1.69%)
    - Gainward 1.46% (against 2.33%)
    - Gigabyte 1.73% (against 1.28%)
    - MSI 1.73% (against 1.24%)
    - Sapphire 1.80% (against 2.02%)
    - Club 3D 2.22% (N / A)
    - XFX 2.41% (N / A)

The figures are generally good. Now see what it is with scores based GPUs:

    - Radeon HD 5770: 2.65%
    - Radeon HD 5850: 3.22%
    - Radeon HD 5870: 3.40%
    - GeForce GTS 250: 1.36%
    - GeForce GTX 260: 2.62%
    - GeForce GTX 275: 3.25%
    - GeForce GTX 285: 4.00%

The Radeon and GeForce high-end rates of SAV pretty close, except for the GTS 250 is significantly more reliable. Dual GPU solutions are not represented because they were not sold in sufficient quantity for the period. No model displays a level of customer service exceeds 5%, which is a very good thing.

    Hard drives

To be recorded the VAS had to be made directly through the merchant, which is not always the case since it is possible to return directly from the manufacturer: however, this represents a minority in the first year.

    - Maxtor 1.04% (against 1.73%)
    - Western Digital 1.45% (against 0.99%)
    - Seagate 2.13% (against 2.58%)
    - Samsung 2.47% (against 1.93%)
    - Hitachi 3.39% (against 0.92%)

Hitachi is plummeting, which was first in the previous ranking! Western Digital retained its second place despite a failure rate increasing, while Maxtor is occupying the first place.

More specifically the failure rate for 1TB drives:

    - 5.76% Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B
    - 5.20% Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C
    - 3.68% Seagate Barracuda 7200.11
    - 3.37%: Samsung SpinPoint F1
    - 2.51% Seagate Barracuda 7200.12
    - 2.37%: WD Caviar Green WD10EARS
    - 2.10% Seagate Barracuda LP
    - 1.57%: Samsung SpinPoint F3
    - 1.55%: WD Caviar Green WD10EADS
    - 1.35%: WD Caviar Black WD1001FALS
    - 1.24%: Maxtor DiamondMax 23

Hitachi is logically the less well placed, what with two separate lines! What about the 2 TB version?

    - 9.71%: WD Caviar Black WD2001FASS
    - 6.87% Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000
    - 4.83%: WD Caviar Green WD20EARS
    - 4.35% Seagate Barracuda LP
    - 4.17%: Samsung EcoGreen F3
    - 2.90%: WD Caviar Green WD20EADS

Overall, failure rates recorded are bad. That does not really want to entrust to 2TB of data to these discs alone: a mirroring will not be too much for securing data. Logically 7200 rpm disks are less reliable than the 5400/5900 rpm, with almost 10% for the Western model!

For the first time, we also integrate SSDs in this article type. The rates of failure recorded by manufacturer:

    - Intel 0.59%
    - Corsair 2.17%
    - Crucial 2.25%
    - Kingston 2.39%
    - OCZ 2.93%

Intel stands here with a failure rate of the most flattering. Among the few models sold over 100 copies, displays a rate of no more than 5% VAS.
