Silent Hill: Downpour
Number eight in the series moves in new direction
Silent Hill: Downpour will be the title of the eighth installment in Konami's horror series - and promises to take the franchise is something of a new direction.
According to the latest edition of US Mag Game Informer - published by huge retailer GameSpot - Downpour will take place in a South-Eastern area of Silent Hill see on maps in previous games but never accessible. Downpour is reportedly a large town, connected up by a subway system that you can ride.
According to a reader over on NeoGAF, water will play a major role in the game, including "bizarre water effects [that] look like an upside down river flowing across a ceiling" - whilst prominent locations seen in previous SH games like schools and hospitals will not make a return.
Players will sometimes be encouraged to strike blows on enemies and flee, rather than always finish them off - and some boss fights will involve QuickTime Events.
A reported upcoming demo will take place in the outskirts of Silent Hill. There will be side quests, and whilst there will be no weapon inventory, guns will weaken and break.
Silent Hill: Downpour is due for release on PS3 and 360 later this year. Check out the original teaser trailer below.

According to Konami, the camera will remain primarily in third-person. Silent Hill: Downpour will continue to offer the "mind-bending" puzzles and "thought-provoking storyline" that launched the series into mainstream fame, and will provide a "deep psychological horror experience" with multiple side-quests depending on the player's decisions and behavior. The player can only carry one weapon at a time and these weapons may break. The game will also feature puzzle difficulty selections. Buildings that were used in previous Silent Hill games, such as the hospital and school, will not return and the element of water plays a prominent role.
The main protagonist is Murphy Pendleton, an escaped prisoner. E3's teaser trailer indicates that a little girl, a postal worker, a civilian, and a female police officer will be supporting characters. The game's events take place in the southeastern region of Silent Hill, which has never been explored in previous games in the series, and the plot will not have any connection to previous installments.

Silent Hill: Downpour is open world “has a lot of side quests”
I’m not sure how I feel about that. It might be brilliant. The info came out in an interview with producer Devin Shatsky on the EU PlayStation Blog. Shatsky says “The town is completely explorable. Downpour has a lot of side quests that aren’t tied to the core linear storyline. You might stumble across a room that triggers a side quest, and completing it might reveal a new bit of Silent Hill lore”.
Another interesting bit of information is that monsters are tied into the weather system – when it starts to rain more things come out. Shatsky says that “when the weather ramps up, so do the amount of monsters. So if the weather goes to hell, you might want to head indoors and find a place to hide”. That could add some interesting tension.
They’ll also be no nurses or Pyramid Head with Shatsky making it clear that “In Silent Hill monsters are directly tied to the protagonist’s background, so the enemies in this game all have meaning to [convict hero] Murphy”.
