Default Windows 8 to relaunch PC gaming

MS to push for PC gaming prominence with new OS

Microsoft plans get behind PC gaming once with a little help from Windows 8, according to a source talking to TechRadar.

The Xbox platform holder and PC giant is set to use the release of its next operating system to plonk itself at the forefront of PC gaming once more, an area many feel Microsoft has neglected.

Microsoft rebooted Games for Windows Marketplace in October, which will have gone some way towards appeasing PC gamers, and it also announced Age of Empires Online and Fable III for the platform.

But it looks like the gaming initiative won't stop there:

"Windows 8 will represent a real new push into PC gaming," the source told TechRadar. "Gaming will be a key component for the whole OS."

Some suggest that PC gaming is a dying breed but, as far as competition with consoles is concerned, the PC still has a profitable monopoly in the MMO market.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm became "the fastest-selling PC game of all time" according to internal figures from publisher Activision Blizzard.

The WoW expansion hit "a record 3.3 million copies sold" in its first 24 hours of availability.

If Microsoft wants to gain control of PC gaming, however, it will mainly have Steam to compete with, Valve's own gaming, distribution and community hub that has established itself as a one-stop-shop on home computers.
