    Red face Cpu/gpu upgrade advise!!

I have saved up some money to do a upgrade but at this moment I can only do either my gpu or my cpu for gaming.

    here's my spec:

    Gigabyte GA-b75m-d3h rev 1.1
    intel core i3 3220 3.3ghz
    Sapphire Radeon 7870 ghz edition dual -x 2gb gddr5
    Cooler Master V550 80+ Gold
    A-data XPG 4x2gb ddr3 1600mhz 9-9-9-24

So i'm looking at either a Sapphire R9 280x (or a used 290) OR a 3rd gen core i5. so what do you guys think? if you were in my position what'd you have done?

    if cpu: budget around 20k
if gpu: budget around 26k (different cause will sell my current cpu or gpu)

Im playing almost all the new games @me dium-high settings at around 30-40 fps so want to improve my gaming experience...

**another question (didnt want to open a new thread): is it worth the hassel to sell my current mobo and cpu to go with 4th gen mobo+cpu?
as in: 3rd gen i5 v 4th gen i5 worth the hassel? or 3rd gen is good enough?

    thanks in advance guys

In short CPU upgrade to a 4th gen won't have dramatic increase in your gaming experience.
In your position I would go for a GPU upgrade but this isn't the time to spend saved up money for a GPU because next-gen GPU line up are knocking the door.
I would upgrade the GPU. The prob being r9 360 or 370 series will have similar performance to the 270 or 280 series . Dramatic increase in performance would be in 40K bracket. But the price of current GPUs such 280X or 290 will drop significantly by then.

So will you wait ?? If so then wait. If you can't. get a r9 280X. As it will increase will gaming experience more the haswell mobo-cpu will. ( make no mistake 4th gen CPU is better. But not that better in gaming sector)

Wait till amd's next linup release and then decide. But going from i3 to i5 would be a good investment. (i3 might hold back higher end gpus' like 280x or 290 or the next gen amd gpus'.)

I'd wait for the AMD r300 series and see how it plays out. Also, IMO the i3 should hold up for a while. Games are not dramitically becoming multithreaded. And lastly, 3rd gen to 4th gen performance difference isn't that great so I'd stick with 3rd gen for now.

directx 12 would fix that bottleneck...

I highly doubt AMD 380/380X will be any less than 50K here in BD. And I also doubt 370/370X will be good enough to out-perform 290/290X. I only see diminishing returns in 290 series for next 1 year. In other words, the amount you'll have to pay to achieve the superior performance gain in 3XX, is much higher than we now spend in 290 per unit.

will the 290 bottleneck my i3 3220 too much though? and saw its bus width is 512bit can my mobo handle it along with my psu?
or maybe i should save up and go for a more power efficient 970?

Get the 290 or 280X, The i3 will bottleneck the GPU, but you will still have a better gaming experience at high settings.

Giddy can be traced back to the same Germanic root *gud– that has given us the word God

What makes you think the 970 is better than 290 apart from some nvidia titles?

your PSU is fine for a 290. it will be bottlenecked by the i3 but if you're planning to upgrade the CPU anytime soon the 290 should be a really good choice.

What makes you think the 970 is better than 290 apart from some nvidia titles?
I wasn't thinking of 970 because of it's superiority rather because of it's power efficiency and bangs/power, im wondering if my psu can handle the 290 if yes than i'll go for a 290.

that's the thing i was wanting to hear! will my psu be fine with a i5 3470k+r9 290? i know it can handle i3 3220+r9 290 due to 3220s low tdp but wondering about i5 3470k+r9 290 combo...

    this is my psu rail:

Your psu wont be able to handle the 290. You need minimum 650w to run 290. Now please exchange with my Toughpower 650w + cash.

Please exchange!! Please!! I myself will come to your place, you don't have to move an inch.

You could also get the Gtx 970, the Extra 512mb cache does a pretty nice job to make some games playable.
