Default Facts about fps(frames per second)

Many people say that games run absolutely smooth at 60 fps and even if the fps goes above 60 human eye can't determine it.But some people told me that games run smoothly at 30 fps and even the movies we watch runs at 30 fps. This is very confusing movies run perfectly smooth. But do games really run smooth at 30 fps.?If not what are the facts behind this fps phenomenon?

I think as long as fps doesn't go down below 30 then it is perfectly playable. I remember playing crysis at around 25 to 35 fps with rare hiccups, C&C 3 had a cap of 30fps. I guess racing and FPS genre games have a smoother game-play experience with higher fps.

depends on ur eyes. Some people notice the lag below 30 fps. Some notice it below 60 fps.

And it depends on ur monitor too. Lcds dat we use have low response and refresh rates. Try moving ur cursor rapidly. U will see lag. So even if a game runs at 60 fps, u may still see lag.

it will b high response rate and low refresh rate

You'll notice the difference once the FPS starts to fluctuate. 60FPS is butter smooth, but once it drops to 30 you'll see how not smooth that is. But with constant 30 FPS experience, you won't have any issues.

Does lagging have anything to do with refresh rates?

absolutly right.i think it is racing games where higher fps is needed.in less 50fps d road-side scene looks to be framing a bit.but in shooting game 30fps is more than enough.it is my personal experiance.

Lagging has a perception effect on fps. Just move ur mouse cursor rapidly in ur lcd. U will see lag and mouse trail. Which means high speed moving objects will not be seen smoothly. So it does not matter whether ur game runs at 30 or 60 fps. If ur monitor cant display fast moving images, ur eyes will perceive the slowness and u will perceive ur game is showing low fps whereas in reality it is not the case.

And having high fps in racing games is wrong idea. Fps itself is a wrong measurement for smoothness. We all watch tvs. Our pal signal for dish channels is capped at 30 fps. So when u watch live racing in tv, do u see any lag? Taile to live f1 cockpit view smooth ashar kotha na. It is because tv screens are better at response rates and refresh rates than our monitors.

Tomal vai the lag ur talking about happens in lcds when the in game rez is lower than the dextop screen rez. It happens only on lcds where u get a sort of motion blur. I actually like this effect.

i have monitor having 60hz refresh rate (crt) at 1200by 1024res.i think it has better refresh rate.when playing racing game with speeding vheicle,i see the front scenes r not framing but d speedely passing side scene ex.trees, house, pillars are framing when less around 50fps.bcoz when u keep ur eye fixed 2 d speedely moving objects, d framing become prominent as d distance of d same object between 2 consecutive frame is increased.

nope. Not that lag. Oita to lag na. :S

U just move ur mouse cursor rapidly. U will see the lag. U will see multiple cursors if u move rapidly, sort of like a mouse trail.

Try the same with CRT monitors. U will see no trail.

So LCD monitors are weak than CRT monitors? Why do we even buy LCD's?

not weak always. It is weak for gaming. CRT is more preferable for gaming due to multiple native resolutions and less latency. LCDs require a specific resolution for optimal visual quality.

However CRTs are harmful for eyes and do not support widescreen. Also they require less space.

LCD monitors have already catched up, though these are expensive now. 100Hz and 120Hz monitors are coming. It fixes the lag issue. All 3d monitors and TVs have 120Hz displays.

not weak always.

All 3d monitors and TVs have 120Hz displays.
no,in vsync off,d border aren't continouous-means not vertically lined d pixels exactly.in racing while d vsync on, the road-side objects' border r vertically arranged properly, but framing seen as they r moving fast.

My present monitor is a Samsung 18.5" LCD with 50000:1 contrast ratio and has 60 hertz refresh rate.If I get a 100hz refresh rate LCD monitor will it make the games more smooth with low fps than before?
