    Default Age of Empires Online

    Developer: Robot Entertainment
    Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
    Release date: TBA 2011

Age of Empires Online , is a history-based real-time strategy computer game under development, to be released in 2011 and digitally distributed. Developed by Robot Entertainment and published by Microsoft. It is the first Age of Empires game to feature Games for Windows – Live and is the first game of Robot Entertainment. Pricing for the final version of the game is yet to be announced although the Beta is free to play.

Age of Empires Online will feature the standard gameplay of past games in the series with the addition of a persistent city that functions when the player is offline, cooperative multiplayer quests, and trading. This game would be blending the real-time strategy (RTS) with massively multiplayer online gaming.

    Civilizations

The Greek civilization is the only civilization playable at the time of the beta, but will expand to others at launch and post-launch. Greeks were chosen because, "The ancient Greeks are a well-known civilization, and their history includes many interesting events and personalities that will be familiar to people. In going back to this era of history, the Greeks were a natural choice."

Age of Empires Online (under the working title Project S(Spartan), is the most recent game developed by Robot Entertainment, and one of its first games. Before being announced, the game was believed to be based on the Halo franchise (See Spartans). Kotaku then reported later that the game played a lot like Age of Empires. The game was officially announced on August 16 2010, and is in an early closed beta phase.

    Features:
    Greek Civilization

Greece: ancient land of beauty, reason, passion ... and war. A peninsula of feuding city-states populated by noble warriors and wise philosophers, Greece stands ready to resist any invaders who underestimate their power. Help guide the Greeks to their rightful place as the strongest of ancient empires.

    Capital City

The fate of the Greek Empire is in your hands, and from your Capital City you will strengthen your economy, improve your technologies, and embark on quests to expand your influence across the Mediterranean. Custom-design your Capital City as it grows into a center for civilization, using blueprints to build custom buildings that open doors to the rest of the world.

Crafting Crafting Halls can be constructed in your Capital City. Each Crafting Hall allows you to create a variety of Advisors and Equipment that enhance different units in the game.

    • Hunting Lodge
      • Enhances Archers and other missile units.

    • Cavalry Hall
      • Enhances all mounted units.

    • Military College
      • Enhances all infantry units.

    • Engineering College
      • Enhances siege weapons and some boats.

    • Builder's Hall
      • Enhances buildings and some boats.

    • Craftsman's Hall
      • Enhances Villagers, Fishing Boats, and Trade Carts.

    • Grand Temple
      • Enhances Priests.

    Weapons & Armor

For your armies to reign supreme on the battlefield, you have to equip them with upgraded weapons and armor. Embark on quests to earn new weapons and armor, then apply them to your soldiers and villagers.
    Weapons

    • Gut Ripper

When warriors wield this sword, they will not only do extra damage to all who feel its touch but also snare units, making them slower and easier prey.
    • Black Enameled Heavy Spear

This spear, black as the darkest night, gives a Spearman a huge increase in effectiveness. Providing a massive bonus increase and the ability to make critical strikes, the spear also increases the amount an enemy is snared when hit.
    • The Kraken's Fist

Named after the monstrous Kraken, this epic ram head gives battering rams a huge boost to damage and increases speed of movement. This ram is available only to the most advanced players.
    • Hero's Bow of Apollo

This bow is said to have been wielded by the god of the sun himself, Apollo. It confers bonus damage to all who use it and adds the chance to make a critical strike.

    Armor

    • Ajax's Heavy War Pelta

Tales say that Ajax himself wielded this mighty shield during the Trojan War. Giving bonus health, bonus damage, and increased armor against Archers, this shield gives any warrior a significant advantage in battle.
    • Hephaestus-Forged Greaves

Said to have been forged by the mighty god of blacksmithing himself, these greaves bestow great power upon their wearer. These heavy greaves give a massive bonus to health but come at the cost of speed of movement. Players will have to make a tough choice if they're lucky enough to get this rare piece of equipment.
    • Runic Prayer Beads

Priests who wear these beads prove much cheaper to train, although it takes quite a bit longer to train them. Some players might value the tradeoff between cost and training time.
    • Breastplate of Ares

This epic breastplate provides a health increase and strong armor. It also reduces the amount of bonus damage that units take from their counterunits, making this a valuable piece of equipment.

    Units & Buildings

To expand your empire, you'll establish settlements across the world. You can choose from various buildings to help you get a foothold in foreign lands, and you can select from many types of units to gather your resources, defend your territories, and defeat your enemies.
    Units

    • Scout

Players start with the Scout unit on almost every quest. It is a tough, fast unit that excels at uncovering the map and killing aggressive fauna like Wolves and Boars. It isn’t much of a fighter against bandits and other human enemies. You only get one, so keep your Scout alive!
    • Hypaspist

This dual-sword-wielding infantry unit excels at killing other infantry. Fairly cheap to produce and available early, this unit can receive many upgrades and a lot of equipment that can boost its power considerably.
    • Villager

The backbone of any outpost, the Villager performs all of the mundane tasks you assign. Villagers pick berries, chop wood, and construct the buildings you use to train your army. Their upgrades let them carry more resources and move and build faster.
    • Priest

Priests can convert enemy units and heal friendly units. If enhanced with the right tech, they can even convert enemy buildings to your side, although they must sacrifice themselves in the process. Even a single Priest can turn the tide of a battle.

    Buildings

    • Barracks

At the Barracks, you train infantry units. The bulk of most fighting forces come from here, as well as their upgrades. Available from the start, the Spearman is a great unit for fighting animals and early bandits.
    • House

Houses add to the population limit for each quest. For every one built, the limit increases by five and lets you build more villagers or military units. Smart players might use several houses to wall off entrances to their base.
    • Storehouse

The Storehouse is a drop-off point for resources gathered by villagers. Small and cheap, it can be built near any resource allowing efficient use of villagers. The upgrades for resource gathering are also found here for wood, food, stone, and gold.
    • Guardtower

Guardtowers provide a way to defend your base and strategic locations without having to spend your limited available population on military units. Although a bit expensive, they can hold their own against small groups of units, especially once upgraded. Paired with Walls, they can be a major part of any defense.

Age of Empires Online gets release date

RTS MMO out on August 16

Microsoft's confirmed that Age of Empires Online will release worldwide on August 16, via both retail and AgeofEmpiresOnline.com.

The online RTS has had an interesting development stretch, with ex-Ensemble developers (that's the shuttered creator of the Age series) Robot Entertainment kicking off construction, before Supreme Commander house Gas Powered Games picked it up last year.

The free-to-play game will feature two civilizations at launch - the Greeks and Egyptians - and "more than 40 hours of free gameplay", says MS.

Naturally, players will also be able to shell out real cash money to purchase Premium Civilization upgrades, which unlock all of a civilization's abilities at once, including special abilities on its tech tree known as "star techs".

Premium Civilization users will also have access to exclusive "rare" and "epic" loot tiers, with non-paying users only given access to common and uncommon items.

Here's the content you'll be able to shell out for at launch, in Microsoft's words:

    1. Premium Civilization Packs: $19.99 USD
Available at launch: Greeks and Egyptians. Take your free
civilizations to the next level, and unlock a tremendous amount
of gameplay and new features. When you upgrade to a Premium
Civilization Pack, you will get the following:

    • Rare and Epic Gear - Become more powerful with upgraded
gear and unique designs that stand out in battle.
    • Advisors - In the Advisor Hall, you can unlock Civilization
Power and Unique Units like Armored Elephants.
    • Tech Tree - Experience the full tech tree with fantastic end
game "Star Techs." Generate resources from your market,
have your troops bandage themselves, or make your people
      immune to conversion in battle.
    • Sparta Player vs. Player - Upgrade to even more PVP options
including setting the gameplay parameters and inviting
your friends to play against you. Demonstrate your ability
by playing ranked games where your glory is recorded
on Leaderboards so you can compare to the best in the
game, or just your own friends. Plus, match make using
TrueSkill so you'll always get a competitive game!
    • Additional Inventory Slots - More than double your
      inventory space.
    • More Workshops - Drastically improve your capital's
production with more workshops to create all of the
      materials you need for crafting.
    • Crafting Halls - Learn unit enhancements from additional
Crafting Halls and use them to your advantage in the game.
    • Empire Points - Spend Empire Points on the best loot in
      the game.
    • In-Game Stores - Earn in-game currency from the stores
      in your Capital City.

    2. Pro Civilization Packs: $19.99 USD
Coming Soon! "Age of Empires Online" will also offer
additional civilizations at a "pro" level, which will provide
all of the upgrades of a Premium Civilization, and players
can jump right into the action starting at level 20.

    3. Booster Packs: $9.99 USD
Expand your play options and get the features you like
the most including new storylines and game modes.

    Available at launch:

    • Defense of Crete Booster which challenges you to defend
against waves of invaders on the island of Crete. Team up
with a friend to battler the incoming horde, and earn new
rewards and gear when you succeed!

    4. Empire Extras: $4.99 USD
Acquire new items and historically themed architectural
pieces for the ultimate level of customization for your
    Capital City.

    Available at launch:

      and decorations (Available for Egyptians)
