Default Re:  my 320 gig usb hdd has only 198gig usable memory

if its 298gb then there is nothing to worry about ....
technically, hdd manufacturer calculate their size of hdd based on 1000MB = 1GB whereas OS calculate this capacity considering 1024MB = 1GB ...

for instance, say u have a 40gb hdd LBA sectors of 80293248 ...
now, divide it with 2000 as according to manufacturer 2000 sectors= 1MB ....
    80293248/2000 = 40146MB ... again 40146MB/1000= 40GB

but , divide it with 2014 as OS measure 2048sectors = 1MB which leads to ,
    80293248/2048 = 39205MB ... again 39205MB/1024= 38GB

thats why it seems like some of our precious memory missing but its just for following the different calculation method ....

It actually is because the storage manufacturers use decimal system to meet SI standards, but file systems calculate them using binary system.

    1 GiB=1024 MiB=1048576 KiB=1073741824 Bytes (File system)
    1 GB=1000 MB=1000000 KB=1000000000 Bytes (HDD Manufacturer)

So, your 320 GB HDD is actually 298.0232239 GiB, according to my calculator. Here, GB is decimal gigabyte and GiB is binary gigabyte. Simple.
