    Lightbulb Section 8: Prejudice

5 Reasons You Should Care About Section 8: Prejudice
See why Timegate's orbital nutjobs might make their second drop something special

Section 8 was a decent enough game that came out at an awkward time and in an awkward position. Launching just a short while before higher profile shooters like ODST and Modern Warfare 2 and caught shortly thereafter in a bizarre legal battle with their publisher, it featured an interesting hook - soldiers in the 8th Armored Infantry who are orbitally bombarded into battle. Hurtling through the atmosphere of planets sans drop pod they're understandably labeled nuts, or "Section 8," for their trouble - but it suffered from some particular issues that kept it from getting much attention.

That's looking to change though with their upcoming self-published follow-up, Section 8: Prejudice. After meeting for a bit with producer Robert Siwiak and designer Mark Yetter, I came away with 5 reasons why the sequel to a game you probably never played will be better, and just might deserve your attention.

    1) The Campaign isn't just a tutorial.
The "singleplayer" mode in Section 8 hardly deserved the name. Coming in at just a couple of hours, it was intended primarily as a tutorial for players to get into the mechanics of the game (something it didn't do particularly well, but we'll get to that), but players wanted more, and Timegate has listened. Prejudice's singleplayer is estimated at five hours and spans a number of worlds, and tells the story of the Arm of Orion, a rebel faction whose history with the empire dates before the Armored Infantry's creation. The nine missions will have a variety of objectives to mix things up and get players ready for Prejudice's online battles.

    2) A more visually interesting world.
Section 8 had an interesting concept, but visually, the execution was somewhat lacking. Players complained that the game looked boring and didn't have much of an identity, and Timegate has taken the criticism to heart. Prejudice isn't going to knock games like Crysis 2 off of the graphics throne any time soon, but the game handles the Unreal Engine 3 well. The lighting and environments in particular impressed, and the singleplayer game has some really great setpieces. At one point, after sabotaging a fleet of enemy orbital forces, you'll drop back planetside, look into the sky, and see those same ships on fire as they slowly burn into the planet's atmosphere. In multiplayer, effort has been taken to make each map distinctive, carrying over from the singleplayer's galaxy spanning campaign, and from the few maps I had a chance to see, it seems to be paying off.
There are still kinks to be worked out though. While the game performed pretty well initially, once the bot-filled swarm match I witnessed really picked up, things got choppy on the 360 build Timegate brought with them. 32 player matches on consoles (with 40 on PC) will do that.

    3) Usability and a streamlined interface.
Section 8 (the first) had a campaign to serve as a tutorial of sorts, but it left players woefully unprepared for the game's particulars online. While the singleplayer portion of Section 8 clocked in at around two hours, producer Robert Siwiak admitted the learning curve for the game came in at about six hours minimum due to poor weapon balancing and overly complicated mechanics. Timegate has put a lot of work into streamlining the those mechanics with Prejudice in an effort to make the game more playable, which is better for just about everyone - novice players can get into the game, and veterans have more people to play with. Timegate is also paring down weapon options to make each gun useful and worth taking, in an effort to avoid the assault rifle spamming that Section 8 devolved into.

    4) An effort to make things "sticky."
Siwiak also stressed the team's understanding that online shooters now need a certain "stickiness" that the original game lacked. With that in mind, Timegate is working on meaningful, persistent character upgrades for Prejudice, as well as purely cosmetic additions as well.

    5) Co-op... sort of.
At this point, co-op in shooters can mean one of two things: multiple players running through a campaign, or the now de rigeur (but still appreciated!) "Horde" style mode, where a team of players faces off against waves of enemy AI. Prejudice is going for the latter, with its Swarm mode. This game mode allows players all the abilities and options they have in online multiplayer without dealing with hordes of online players, and that's something that appreciated. Besides, it's good practice for calling in mech drops and hover bikes against human opponents in the future.

There are other reasons to be into Section 8: Prejudice, from some great animations (particularly the more elaborate kill moves) to the Tribes-inspired dashing-into-jetpacking dynamic of combat, to dedicated server support on PC and consoles (including the ability to download a dedicated server client for the console platforms), and shooter fans should think about moving the game to their radar when Timegate starts dishing out more details about their release plans in December

Some Info About Section 8 Game By TimeGate Studios From The Developer of Timeshift:
    Gameplay

In Section 8, characters wear powered armor suits which provide damage absorption and augmented mobility. Players can use "overdrive" to move horizontally at superhuman speeds, or activate vertical thrusters (jetpack) to achieve new heights.

Players are able to "burn-in" by dropping onto the battlefield from orbital dropships hovering at 15,000 feet from the surface, thus eliminating fixed spawn points. "Burning-in" also creates the opportunity for the player to choose where they drop on the map, granting the game an increased aspect of unpredictability. This process is an interactive experience as players can be shot down upon entry by players and anti-aircraft turrets alike, though these situations can be avoided or mitigated by using the "air-brake" feature which allows the player to make mid-air adjustments.

Players are encouraged to work in teams to achieve objectives and defend one another. They may deploy defensive structures such as Mini-Gun Turrets, Rocket Turrets, Anti-Air Turrets, Supply Depots, or Sensor Arrays to protect friendly-controlled objectives, or deploy vehicles such as Tanks or Heavy Armors which can operate to assault enemy-controlled objectives. Players are be able to purchase these using "Requisition Points" which are awarded to the player for various feats they perform through play

Players are able to choose their primary and secondary weapons, such as assault rifles, pistols, shotguns, and sniper rifles, as well as grenades, explosives, knives, mortar launchers and healing units.[8] The player is also able to create their own player class through various stackable modules that determine the player's speed, stealth, or the regeneration of the limited-use jetpack. Excessive damage endured by the player to certain parts of their body, such as their legs, arms, head, or chest, may disable or hinder the use of these enhancements.

Dynamic Combat Missions (DCMs), a type of mini-game, can be activated mid-combat by the player, and can reward the player with Requisition Points when completed successfully. Some DCMs will include protecting a convoy, destroying a bridge, or assassinating an enemy character.

    Campaign

Section 8 includes a single-player campaign mode called "Corde's Story" that allows the player to proceed as a character named Alex Corde of the 8th Armored Infantry. The first several missions take place on the arid planet New Madrid and later move to a temperate planet. The single-player campaign consists of eight objective-based missions on the same maps as multiplayer that serve as a tutorial to the player for multiplayer play.

    Plot

The name "Section 8" is derived from an old United States military discharge regulation for reason of being mentally unfit for service, and also refers to the 8th Armored Infantry in the game because of their participation in near-suicidal missions.

Section 8 takes place in the future after the human race has discovered interstellar travel and has colonized across the galaxy. At the time of the game, a group called the Arm of Orion, has begun to 'disconnect' the outermost frontier planets from the main governing body, taking them over while keeping their presence hidden from the government. As space travel is slow, it often takes weeks to communicate with or travel to a frontier world, affording the Arm with enough time to seize worlds and build their base of power, ultimately preparing an ambush for the government forces that will eventually respond. The government then discovers the Arm of Orion, and sends in the 8th Armored Infantry, including Alex Corde (the player), on a mission to investigate, and presumably fight, the Arm invasion.

TimeGate Studios cites Aliens and Blade Runner as major influences for the game.

Section 8: Prejudice Release Dates Set

Timegate Studios has dated two of the three versions of its upcoming FPS sequel Section 8: Prejudice. Via its Twitter account, the developer confirmed that the game will land on Xbox Live Marketplace in two weeks on April 20, followed by the Windows version on Games for Windows Live come May 4.

    Section 8: Prejudice features:

    • Mobilize by Drop Spawning from 15,000 feet, use Jet Packs to evade enemies, and ram opponents in Overdrive
    • Campaign mode: 5-hour story-driven single-player campaign
    • Conquest mode: Large-scale multiplayer for up 32 players
    • Swarm mode: 4 player co-op mode where shooter gameplay meets tower defense
    • Offline bot support for all game modes
    • Highly customizable weapon and equipment loadouts; deep level progression and unlockable content systems
    • Dynamic Combat Missions: ensure no two multiplayer games ever play the same
    • Dedicated Servers for all platforms, robust Stats Portal and Clan Management tools
    • All of this for only $15 / 1200 Microsoft points – straight to your hard drive!

TimeGate also unveiled a loyalty rewards program for its dedicated Section 8 fans. TimeGate will unlock Section 8: Prejudice equipment upgrades for players of the original Section 8, based on the Level they attained as of April 20th, 2011. Anyone who played the original Section 8 will instantly unlock Aegis Armor and the Reactive Plating upgrade, while those who reached Level 25 will additionally unlock the Ablative Plating upgrade. The very dedicated players who attained Level 50 will also get the Explosives Amplifier upgrade. Provided players have not changed their Microsoft Gamertag or PlayStation®Network ID, the upgrades will be unlocked automatically.
“As the release of Prejudice quickly approaches, we’re really excited to unveil loyalty rewards for players of the original Section 8. We think the very attractive $15 price point of Prejudice will introduce the franchise to a ton of new fans,” said Adel Chaveleh, President and CEO of TimeGate Studios. “Xbox LIVE Arcade is the perfect platform on which to debut our large-scale launch. With a little extra time on the PC and PlayStation®Network launches, we will be able to ensure that gamers get the best possible experience and a solid launch on each and every platform.”
