Thread: Google's 1Gb/Sec Internet

  1. #1

    Default Google's 1Gb/Sec Internet

    Source: http://itgrunts.com/2010/10/21/googl...ernet-is-here/

Google today announced that it was launching the fiber-optic broadband service in the US calling it “The Google Fiber”. The service will be offered for trail run to the residents of Stanford, California. Google also said that it signed an agreement with Stanford University which will enable it to build the high speed fiber optic network to the university’s residential subdivision which will allow about 850 homes housing staff and students to get connected.

Once connected residents are to get a blazing 1 gigabits per second high speed Internet which is 100 times faster than an average Internet connection. Google said that once the field trial goes well, Google will roll out the service and expand it. Our sources had said that Salt Lake City, Utah was one of the hot spots where Google will be introducing the service. This will let Google target a larger audience in a big city.
I could've downloaded so many HQ anime with that speed...

Why? 1Gb = ~ 120MB, A dual HDD setup in RAID 0 or SSD would be enough to handle the data storage speed.

Sumon vai, the thread title clearly says 1Gb/s not 1GB/s. I think that's enough to indicate that he's referring to Gigabit(s) and not Gigabyte(s).

As for the connection itself, I doubt BD will EVER have that kind of speed.

ato speed diye actually laav nai.

U have to consider the average speed.

For example ami 1Gbps line nilaam and torrent download korlaam.

Kintu jodi oirokom high speed ala seeds i na thake, ami jiboneo 1gbps e download korte parbo na.

It is similar to downloading torrents from seeds who use 56kbps modem and i m using 768kbps line

I am pretty much sure that Google is trying to start some kind of Cloud Computing service. Now think about it, if the whole world stays in a WAN, or at least most of it, does speed really matter? Google is genius you know ...

    1Gbit/s is old, meh
OVH offers 10gbit/s in FR, Same is attainable in JP and SE.
And of course, the NICs required for those connections don't exactly come for cheap either.
JP and SE's backbone can sustain much more, actually.

    Wheeee, my 1Gbit/s server :3

It was pretty obvious that I meant gigabits, but I've gone ahead and edited the first post so I don't get any more people whining about it.
