    1TB HDD is a good choice. He can copy delete files anytime and it can save a lot of time from writing 1tb data on disks. But the question is, can he afford to losse 1tb data? I'm not saying that it'll happen definitly but there's always a chance. So in my point of view, if he wants to preserve data for long time, dvd rw is the best choice. Definitly he can do this if he protect disks properly.

    BTW, i dont like asus's optical drives because of my personal experience. I prefer samsung.

    DVDRw 1800
    1TB = ~225 DVDs
    1 DVD = ~23tk
    total: ~7000tk [plus point: none; downside: buy dvd, burn dvd, time waste, faulty dvd in dvd pack, write error during burning, scratch on dvd, much more physical space needed to store, slow as hell etc etc]

    1TB HDD = ~4700tk (iirc)
    2x1TB HDD = ~9400tk [plus point: total freedom, only copy important data on both hdd and so much more]

    DVD RW = 1600tk (samsung)
    1TB = 225 DVDs
    1 DVD = 10 tk (ydd, classic i'm usin these since 2007 and all are ok until now)
    total = 3850 tk

    Except the waste of time thing, all downsides you mentioned are a matter of consciousness. I can't

    take the risk to loose 1TB of my HD movie collection but i can afford to download 2 or 3 movies

    again which i lost for a faulty disk.

    And bro, theoretically having 2 1TB HDDs for security is an excellent thought but like me many

    people cant afford 9400 tk (or more) for this particular reason.

    10tk dvds get damaged (even if unused) over time. We have burned over 1000s dvds and only the verbatims can retain data without any worries.
    If you are concerned about data security, 10tk dvds are the last choice.

    Anyways, too much off topic.

    Even if I go for quality disk, how long I would be able to keep it safe (unused and packed) ? 50 years?

    those guys burnt game dvd's at maximum speed...... are'nt they? Higher speed recording saves time but causes higher error rates while slower speed recordings gives the best chance of having a higher quality disc with lower error rates. Maybe that's the main reason but there could be few more.

    It not only depends on quality disks but also how you are burning those.

    Ok, so guys who r saying that i should buy HDD, thats obviously a good point, but even if i get a HDD, i need to copy my DVD's into the HDD.& for that i need a good enough drive. Anyways, thats not my concern. My current DVDrw is ASUS. I hav been using them for 1.5 yrs & now they hav gone weak. Cant see dvd movies with even the slightest of scraches & copies vary slow. So got to buy 1. I went to the market & saw liteon, Asus & Samsung drives. So which 1 should i go for???
