GIGABYTE Open Overclocking Championship 2010: World Wide Finals Preview

24 Sept 2010 - One day before the event starts, we popped over to Huashan Creative Park - the place where the GIGABYTE Open Overclock Championship 2010: World Wide Finals will be held.

Check out the main arena for GOOC 2010. Expect this room to be filled with white clouds of liquid nitrogen escaping later!

Let's run through the parts given to competitors for this year's GOOC:
Intel Core i7-980X Processor Extreme Editions (3.33GHz)
    GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD7
    ADATA XPG Plus Series DDR3-1866+ v2.0 6GB tri-channel kit
    Seagate Momentus XT 500GB
    GIGABYTE ODIN Pro 1200W PSU

Yes, tanks and more tanks of liquid nitrogen! GIGABYTE OPEN Overclocking - Open category, no holds barred.

The list of 15 competitors for 13 different countries. The competition benchmark lineup includes Super PI mod 1.5 32M, MAXXMEM, Pifast and Wprime 32M.

    ==========================================================================

GIGABYTE Open Overclocking Championship 2010: World Wide Finals Coverage

    Setting up

25 September 2010 - VR-Zone is onsite for the GIGABYTE Open Overclocking Championship (GO OC) 2010 World Wide Finals.

After various qualifiers, 15 contestants from 13 countries remain. Today, we will find out who the undisputed champion is.

Yes, this is an open category overclocking championship - hardware modifications are allowed and liquid nitrogen is used for cooling.

To ensure fairness, processors are allocated via lucky draw.

    Hardware Specifications
Intel Core i7-980X Processor Extreme Edition (3.33GHz)
    GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD7
    ADATA XPG Plus Series DDR3-1866+ v2.0 6GB tri-channel kit
    Seagate Momentus XT 500GB
    GIGABYTE ODIN Pro 1200W PSU

    Benchmarks
    Pifast
    MAXXMEM
    Super PI mod 1.5 (32M)
    Wprime (32M)

    Scoring System

During the 4hrs 50mins of overclocking, contestants have to take a screenshot of their result and be submitted to the judges.
The scoring system is as follows.

Scores Pifast MAXXMEM Super Pi Wprime
    1st 20 20 30 20
    2nd 16 16 24 16
    3rd 12 12 20 12
    4th 10 10 16 10
    5th 8 8 12 8
    6th 6 6 10 6
    7th 4 4 8 4
    8th 2 2 6 2

    Let The Games Begin!

    The final 10 minutes

During the last 10 minutes of the GIGABYTE GO OC, the leaderboard was switched off so that no one would truly know the outcome of the competition until it was over.

Leaderboard 10 minutes before the end of GO OC 2010: in first place, we have Matose, in second place, stephenyeong trailing by 12 points, and speedtime.wing in third.

stephenyeong has not submitted his MAXXMEM results. This could very well be the last few deciding minutes.

    Winners / Prize Presentation
After the tense last 10 minutes - and more nail biting - the judges finalized the score and the Champion, Second Place and Third Place winners were announced.

speedtime.wing from China takes Third Place.

stephenyeong from Hong Kong was unfortunately unable to get the points he needed from MAXXMEM during the final 10 minutes, but still walks home with Second Place!

And the Champion of the GIGABYTE Open Overclocking Championship 2010 is none other then Matose from Romania!

Money doesnt matter. They bench for fun anyway at home, here they can bench, meet friends, party and also compete with each other. Thats the whole point

Also, it takes a shitload of money to bench with LN2/LHe anyway, so the fact that they get it here for free along with other facilities is what matters to them
