Default NVIDIA GPU Roadmap To 2013 - Kepler and Maxell GPU's Coming

NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference 2010 opening keynote just ended her in San Jose, and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has announced the successor to the Fermi GPU that was released in 2009. The new GPU will be called ‘Kepler’ and is scheduled to be released later in 2011. Jen-Hsun said that hundreds of engineers have been working on this processor and that it will be their first 28nm design. NVIDIA said they will have billions invested into the development of the processor and that it will be 3 to 4 times the performance per watt compared to Fermi. After Kepler is released at some point in 2011 the roadmap then shifts focus to Maxwell in 2013. This processor is said to be 10 to 12 times the performance per watt compared to Fermi, a sixteen-fold increase on parallel GPU computing and will be built on the 22nm process.

Good news. Looks like Nvidia is busy with Fermi's successor. I just hope they don't make the same mistake twice.

I'm actually disappointed. They just introduced the Fermi cards and already planning to replace it.

Because it is a failure. Besides, every company focuses on its future products. I heard somewhere that Windows 7 was under construction from somewhere around 2002, 4 years before even Vista was released.

Default Re: NVIDIA GPU Roadmap To 2013 - Kepler and Maxell GPU's Coming

Fermi was a major failure of Nvidia (except GTX 460). Everytime ATI comes up with something new, Nvidia has to battle them with something more powerful but nothing cheaper. Since the G200 series, Nvidia made losses with high-end GPUs. So they started their rebranding campaign to hold the market. History repeated itself with their Fermi series and here is nothing new. They tried to back that up that loss by making a quick and lucky R&D and came up with GTX 460. If this card could not reach market in time, Nvidia would have made heavy losses. The last thing Nvidia did worthwhile was developing the G92 (8800). G92 was indeed a discovery way ahead of its time during the time of its launch. However, Nvidia spoiled the broth repeatedly by rebranding it namely, 9800GT/GTX/GX2, GTS 250 and GT 330. And there is always their signature PhysX (taken from Ageia) and CUDA (all the GPGPU stuff common people rarely use).

Back when 8800 was around, most of the best games were made for PCs rather than consoles. PS3 and Xbox 360 were not that popular. However in the recent years, games in PCs were not as good as they used to be. One after another, graphics cards were released, but with no good games around, people lost interest and shifted more to consoles. Where have those games gone?

Regardless of all these, I still haven't given up my hope on Nvidia. I am currently an ATI user. Nevertheless, I hope very soon they will be able to come back to the market with something revolutionary and affordable at the same time. I hope game developers will once again make something phenomenal like GTA Vice City, Max Payne series, Half-Life 2, Hitman, etc. I really want to play games the way they were meant to be played!

Fermi ta aro 1 year develop kore aro bhalo hoto. Take the 460 as the example, a revision to its chipset and it gave ATI a run for its money in its strongest sector, the <200USD market.

480 ar 470 er erokom revision ashle to 5850 ar 5870 theke emnei 30% better perform korto, which I would say would almost be on par with HD6000 series (from the information I know from Mazhar bhai).

Me too. To be honest, I need Nvidia more as I do GPU based rendering and most of the raytracers are CUDA based. Also, ATI drivers disappointed me. My first GPU was Nvidia's, but I am using ATI because they are simply the best now. If Nvidia reclaims its position in the future, I will go with Nvidia again. But lets just accept the reality. ATI succeded, and Nvidia failed. What happened in the past is past, what will happen in the future only time will tell, only present matters.

What ? At that time, even the name 'Vista' wasn't announced, AFAIK. It was 'Windows Longhorn'...

Yes it was, I am saying that they started working on this Windows 7 even before their next OS Vista (codename Longhorn) was released (2006). Few days ago when searching whether Windows 8 will be 128-bit OS, I also came to know that the so called "Windows 8" was in labs from around 2005. I do not trust this source though. This is how companies plan for the future, Nvidia and ATI are no exception. They just toy with us by unveiling things one by one.

First, new incident? How long ago we know the word gpu? How many series they made when they faced competitive market? 8 series? Popularity and competition started strongly. So yes its a new incident i would say. Go back to gf 8 series for example.

Guys, its a logical step, as we have seen in the past decade or so. A new node comes (28nm this time) and the architecture is revised/built from scratch simply because its feasible to do that in order to utilise the smaller node's numerous advantages. Kepler is just that, and it will be met by a Cayman 28nm refresh. Similarly, Maxwell will be met by a new AMD architecture built on 22nm (most probably full node this time), Codename starts with a S

No need to get all worked up.

GPU's usually take nearly 4 years to go from design phase to completion. Hence 6xxx was actually being designed in 2006 or so. Talk about predicting and forward thinking.

Really? I should learn to shut up better. It was preliminary though, lots of difficulties being encountered but thats the same with most new GPU launches. Lets wait and see
