It depends on many things. Do you prefer Nvidia or ATI? If you choose to go with Nvidia, get the GTX 460. If you want to be with ATI, get the HD 5770. Your current PSU is 500W... is it branded? How much amps on the +12v rail? Look for a table on the PSU that will provide you with these infos. But my suggestion will be to get a 600-650 W PSU (~10-11k) to be on the safe side. That way, you will not have to upgrade PSUs very often and your components will also be safe (don't go with cheap PSUs to save money, they will let you down every now and then).

If you can get a 460, then get it. It'll definitely be better than the 5770. But the 460+new PSU might not fit your budget which is why I didn't suggest it at first.

It is generally the case, but GTX 460 is different. Thats why I specifically mentioned that card. If you need the CUDA/PhysX features, go for GTX 460, its not crap like 470/480. Its surprisingly cool, cheap and efficient. If you don't need those features, go for HD 5770/5750. They are very efficient, cheap and cool. Don't pay heed to everything people says as lots of people misunderstand the fact that GTX 460 is a good card (unlike other "Fermi" cards). But ATI has poor driver support, Nvidia has better driver support. Its personal preference, you have to decide what to get.

Theres no way he can fit in a PSU + GTX460 within his budget. Also, theres no way id recommend him to run a GTX460 with his current PSU. Best bet is to get a 500W Tt + HD5770.

Does he really need another 500W PSU? (Depends on his amperage on +12V rail and efficiency but he didn't reveal those).

Not efficiency, since that only means he will draw more AC current for a certain amount of DC current being supplied to the PC. Yes, it does depend on the 12V rail but I can guarantee that Value Top will overrate the watts, 12V rail amps, everything. GTX460 is no slouch when it comes to power draw, hence anything less than a Tt 500W PSU is not recommended IMO

That'll be any branded 500W PSU. A 650W PSU can SLI 2 460s! In you can do it in the near future get that!

It depends on which batch of Value-Top it is. Three sorts 'f Value-Top have been available in the BD market.

The first - 2X18A 12V rails for 500W and 2X20A rails for the 600w(modular) printed on the white spec lable. These were available a long long time ago, when Comcity made its debut in the PSU segment with these recommended as their server PSUs. My 600W unit has driven a 8800SLi rig and later a 4890 rig along with an [email protected] without any sort 'f hassle. It still powers a friend 's Q9400+5850 Black rig perfectly. It 's doing its 3rd year now and hasn 't shown a bit 'f flaw.

Then came out these modular versions 'f the 500W and the 600W (which was also modular previously) with a black spec. label reporting 2X 16A,12V rails for both 'f them. The only difference between the two is that more connector cables are provided with the latter. These r absolute crap. Stay away from them.

And the third is the 1 available evrywhere for 1k. This is only a generic PSU with a bottom intake 120mm and comes with a fake Value-Top Label.

So if he has the 500W of the first batch it would be appropriate to use with the 460 im assuming. Nice info, didnt know value top made any decent PSU. Thanks
