No offline UPS saves my rig from restarts. At times it gets even worse, the UPS falls dead along with the rig after a blackout. I 've alrdy tried and ditched IDEAL 2.2KVA and MICRO 2KVA;the latter i beleive is the best offline UPS available.
Therefore i 've come to the conclusion that ill be needing an online UPS.

What UPS do you have now ?
I havn' t compared but i guess the 460 consumes less power than a 5870. And you have a quad in there. Tomar to offline 1/1.2KVA diye hoye jaoar kotha.

I had the following setup handled pretty well by a 1.2 KVA Apollo -
    i5 [email protected] 3.8, [email protected]/1240 , 4GB RAM, 750W PSU, 4X 12"CCTs, 4 or 5 X120MM fans, 3X80MM Fans, 2HDDs, and an optical drive.

Hell broke loose when i upgraded to the 5970 + 9800GT and the tons of fans in the SPEDO AP.

1200VA e made by OVO. This happens only when the PC is on high load, works fine if I'm playing CSS. Recently the UPS started making noises as well when its under load. Need to get one soon, and 2 of them!

    Default Re: Online UPS

Online UPS shob gulai xpensive. Production/Manufacturing costs alone are very high. In fact these wich we r talkin about here are the cheapest. 2KVA and 3KVA are quite similarly priced, bcz both from these bands contain the same amount of batteries - 8X 12v 7.2Ah.
RA/Micro/Apollo/GreenPower eder 2KVA and 3KVA te onk price differnce thake, but eder 2KVA 'r daam diye ami aro 1ta theke 3ta 5970 kinte parbo.
    RA/Ingen 2KVA will cost u 87k. APC 2KVA - 1.3/1.5lac. Apollo 3KVA - 55/60k.

BTW, yes this happens when their is a power failure while the card is being stressed to the max. , like in Split/Second or BC2.
And just 1 more thing, if you don 't mind me saying - OVOs are super crap ! A 650VA PowerGuard or other brands can defend a restart with a 17" CRT plugged in; an OVO 650 can be guaranteed to restart.

Oh, sorry ! Abt that noise - do u have a speaker plugged into the UPS by ne chance ? If so remove it.

When i had my G500 plugged into the Apollo,it would sound worse than a rattle snake in inverter mode and the CPU shut down.

BTW what do you mean by 2 'f them ?

The speaker is the only thing not connected to the UPS. The full PC + my ISP's modem is connected.

And 2 because I need another one for my console setup. But that one can wait.

    Default Re: Online UPS

If I am not mistaken, the working principle of your UPS is not the reason for restarting. You are just overloading it. There is one easier solution. Buy a mid range power supply and use the 2 power supplies against 2 UPS' in tandem. For mother board and GPU and HDD, use the power supply that you are using at the moment. Put all the fans and optical drives on the new one with a new UPS.

Online UPS is not necessarily the sloution that you are looking for. If the maker is not a good one, you will have huge loss when running on an online ups. It will be working all the time. It will be a good heat and sound source for your room. Go through all the specs before making a final decision. I think the only 2 systems in your home that may need an online UPS are the LCD TV and a damn expensive sound system.

    Default Re: Online UPS

@SinEater , i really appreciate you taking out some time to share your POV.

Hmmm. I know very well right from the start that im overloading it. The IDEAL 2.2KVA smtimes had overloaded on its display rathr than falling dead. But off-line UPS beyond 2.2KVA do not exist in our market. That 's y i decide to switch to an online unit.
I previously had my 5870 rig powered by an Apollo 1200VA. Just adding another 5870 and a 9800GT threw me in a situation where 2.2KVA falls short ? How do you explain that ? By theory a 2.2KVA should be handling my current setup quite well right ?
My power consumption is at best 600W (i serously bet its less than that). Considering at least 80% efficiency i can conclude that im drawing 750Watts from the mains.Add to that 50Watts fr the monitor.Equals 800Watts.
    An offline 2.2KVA has a loading capacity of 2200 X 0.6 = 1320 W. In inverter mode that implies to 1320 X 0.7 = 924W. So y would this be overloaded at 800W or less ? Can u plz explain ?

Using two PSU's in parallel is not a permanent solution for me. Ne other advice, lik a dealer who can provide me with a 3KVA offline UPS ?

Im xpcting @minitt to share his opinion too.

You can either get "Ablerex" (Tech Valley) or "General Power" (Digital Waves) or APC (Will give the details once I am confirmed)

    Default Re: Online UPS

The only thing that I can think about is that although the UPS is name plated at 2.2 kVA, it is not rated as such. And when you use a multiplying factor of 0.6 (for the stupid power factor of an inverter), there shouldn't be any need to multiply it again with 0.7. Which leaves us with 1300+ kW to play around with. 1 reason can be the switching for the line interactive UPS is taking longer at higher loads. This again tells me that the UPS is really not rated at 2.2 kVA. My 600 kVA UPS does quite well with a load of 300 watts. So yours should do fine with a load of 600 watts.

I would say try to find a supplier for APC, or get someone to bring one for you. There are other solution providers who provide UPS for banks and switch rooms. May be you can try to find those professionals. I shall try to locate one for you. Rahimafrooz also has IPS/UPS units of the size that you require. I am not sure about the price though. You can use as back up of your whole room if possible.

I would still say not to go for an online UPS if it is not a damn good brand.

RA doesn't provide offline UPS above 1KVA. I spoke to some technicians in MICRO who revealed to me that the amount again needs to be multiplied by 0.7 in order to calculate the max. loading capacity in inverter mode. When u multiply by p.f. you only get the max. loading capacity in AC mode. All i can deduce and as technicians say is that the transfer time is the culprit.
