At <$100 (not BD inflated prices), I would say there is because you get a fairly good balance of audio quality for gaming and a decent mic too.

Wow Link3 has gone South.Re-editing my post: I'll go with what aayman bhaiya said, if you are a competitive player and need a mic(CSGO, BF3/4, Dota2, LOL), get a Siberia v2. It's a lot less hassle when you have e single headset and less clumsy than having to use a second headset as a mic if you have a headphone, or a separate dangling mic.If you want good sound, and have a not so high budget: look into the Superlux HPs which are usually around ~35-50$, and has wonderful sound that even rivals the more high end HPs on the market. Changing the pads to velours will also increase the comfort, and overall is a really good investment for very less. If you want the utmost competitive edge(positional sound), and a medium budget- look in the Audio Technica AD700. It's a full open back HP, and is really comfortable and has really nice and very big soundstage(foot steps will be more pronounced from any direction. Though it leaks a lot, and noisy environments like LAN might be a downside. If you have a higher budget, and want a open back HP- I can recommend my personal favorite: the Sennheiser HD558 or HD598. Should have similar sound stage compared to the AD700 but a more premium feel and high build quality. If you are looking in to the high end gear: you could look in to the Beyers. Esp the DT770, people rave about the sound stage, and has ample bass for bass heads. You'll need a good amp if you are getting the 150-300ohm version. Normal builtin realteks are going to sound like tin cans with these HPs. My personal recommendation for sound card would be the Xonar DGx, cheap yet filled with features and also boasts a headphone amp which is plenty for low-mid end HPs.

You might be able to get an HD558 for ~130-150$. They are usually on sale at that price.

For sound card get a Xonar DGx, or get usb DAC/AMP combo which you can use on the fly.

What do you mean by reference quality?

The thing about normal headsets vs audiophile headphones is that, the latter will sound waaaaay better when coupled with a good DAC/AMP(if needed), but is expensive. Getting a sound card for a normal headphone is a waste, it might sound a bit better/different than onboard, but it's not going to be a huge difference.

''Can we get a bit of context for that statement?

It could be talking about one of two things:

First, it could be talking about a pair of headphones that can be used as a reference point for judging other headphones. This is a term that critics in almost every area use. When I was a DVD critic, we used to talk about reference discs, that you could use to determine the quality of a home theatre system. Likewise, if you are trying to judge headphones, you want to have a reference pair--one that you know well and is of high enough quality that it gives you a comparison point.

The other possibility is that it is referring to a pair of headphones that is accurate enough to be used as a reference point for the music that it plays. In studio, headphones are one tool that can be used to determine if a track is mixed right, and you want to use reference grade equipment to ensure that everything is right. Often, real studio designed/reference grade headphones are actually less preferred for listening to music, even though some of us tend to prefer that balanced sound. In that context, studio headphones are often contrasted with "hi-fi" headphones, which aren't designed to be precise and accurate so much as they are designed to make music sound really pleasant to the ears.''
