Thread: URGENT > Win 8.1 retail boxed version - obsolete if mobo burns out or upgraded?

  1. #1

Default URGENT > Win 8.1 retail boxed version - obsolete if mobo burns out or upgraded?

    ^ that is the question.
After installing win 8.1 64bit on a machine - if the mobo burns out, is the license useless? So, what in the case of processor/mobo upgrade? Is the hardware dependency stringent? Or MS gives some chances.

    Bit urgent.

not useless. But you will have to call Microsoft for re-activation. This is assuming you have the retail version. OEM versions however become useless.

There is no longer OEM version/Retail version starting from Win 8. Their license terms has changed... it's now Personal Use License and System Builder License.

If you buy a Disk and install on your PC, it automatically becomes, "Personal Use License". And "Personal Use License" states:

    1) Can only be used by one user at a time.
    2) Can be transferred to new hardware, if removed from the prior PC.

I also asked Microsoft support regarding this, and they confirmed.

For more info read this: http://www.microsoft.com/OEM/en/lice...id=6V7rwWzATM3

Thanks, I also asked MS and they said licensing structure has changed since win 8 platform.

I went to IDB inquiring abt licensed OS. They could not confirm the license type - all those glorious resellers (with awards too). How do u interpret clause 1 though? OS, installed one machine will of course be used by one user. What is 'at a time'?

it basically means, one license per pc. you cannot install on multiple pc at the same time.

From this page and other sh.i.t load of links I trolled thru, I figured tht the hardware dependency should not exist as such, should it?

your OS will be linked to your hardware... but you can change your hardware or transfer the license to another pc once every 3 months(as far as i remember). In case of damage to your hardware, you might need to contact microsoft and they will reset your OS-hardware link.

If that is the case with new licensing, then calling Microsoft will help you Transfer the license.

The easiest way to spot oem version is that they only come with the disk. No retail packaging at all's

Why not wait for Windows 9?

Windows 9 is dead... they are replacing it with Windows 10. And looks like it will be free for Win 8/8.1 users.

OEM, Retail... doesn't matter after Win 8, once you install it becomes "Personal Use License".

I think jegula market e pawa jachhey shob OEM. As @[email protected] said, they all come in sealed sleeves. Kono seller/reseller etao boltey partesey na. Licensing terms were changed during 8 and gain rechanged during 8.1. So under tht u r not supposed to get a sys builder lic for personal use.

After all this -- is it still ok to get an OEM version? Mobo upgrade holo ba burn out holo - and MS gets to tell me - dude, u fooked up. No resets?

    Ami conclusive kichu pachhi na.

yup. my Win 8 x64 Pro is OEM also. I purchased it from Rishit.

But during setup, i was given a "Personal Use License" and I had to accept that in order to install.

I have been reinstalling using my key for years now. Once it said that I reached some limit and asked me to call MS support. I called and the dude asked why I was reinstalling. I just said that I upgraded my SSD and cloned my older C drive. He authorized it and I proceeded as normal. Took about 5 minutes total.

usually problem kore na. Hell I activated my pirated windows by calling their automated activation lines lol.

If the disc doesnt come in retail box, then it is OEM. I bet in dhaka it will be oem version since they are always cheaper than retail boxed versions.
