    It'll probably work fine on normal boards.

    From the looks of things, this doesn't even seem to have ECC -- appears to be a normal stick to me.

    How do you tell if it has ECC or not by the look?

    The Ram looks like this to me. And it says it supports ECC. I believe no desktop motherboard will boot with ECC supported modules installed.

    for the most people.... you are right.
    but it is totally depends on chipset and whether the manufacturer will implement ecc supported chipset to desktop mobo.
    many Asus workstation mobo supports ECC ram,
    and yes you are correct on the basis that these types of mobo are not much used by normal consumer (gamer and media user), but for the number crunching folks, they find a way. take a look @ Gigabyte X79S, Asus P9D WS
