    for my precious 280x
    hmm?
R9 280X takes about 250w alone. Toxic version can draw up to 350W. TR2 has two v12 rails at 18A or 17A. No single 12V rail would be sufficient enough to fulfill the demand of both CPU and GPU. You need a PSU which will be able to supply atleast 500W at V12 rail. Something like Cooler Master GX II.

Dont you have a i3-2100? Isnt 280X a bit of an overkill for your CPU?

350w really? So 290x might consume 700w by itself right?

About psu- some tr2 500 will be able to deliver only 450w continues which is not sufficient, multiple rail will make it even worse, so i think its better to have a true 500/550w psu with single rail.

(the first link is fumark test which doesnt actually mean power consumption in gaming...)

there are controversies on the internet over this matter... some site saying vapor x 280x takes power just as a dualx do, 270w max... and some saying lot more.

but i believe that it can take upto 350w when overclocked or voltage tweaked.... without overclock it shouldnt be more than 300-320w i guess. (sapphire recommended a 750w psu for this, unlike recommending a 550w for dualx)

How come! I don't think this cooler can even dissipate 350 of heat, i haven't seen any other benchmarks claiming this though :S

Yes brother the Sapphire TOXIC version which is already very overclocked and has extra power phases to go even further can take up to 350W. Its true just google it.

Just because the TOXIC version of 280X takes 350W doesn't mean that 290X will take 700W. That sort of logic is flawed. The amount of Power a GPU draws depend on its design. 290X doesn't have a TOXIC version but a Tri-x can go up to 400W

CPU, GPU, RAM. PSU, HDD/SSD your entire system works together like a chain. And your system is as powerful as its weakest link.

If your CPU cannot keep up with your GPU, then you will end up under utilizing the GPU. In the same way if your GPU cannot keep up with you CPU then you will end up under utilizing your CPU. Which is why we start ranting when some one suggests R7 250X with i5.

GTX 680 gets bottlenecked by i3 3220. It has been tested (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAgpvWc4VBM). R9 280X performs on the same level as GTX 680. Your CPU being weaker than i3 3220 I am quite certain, it won't be able to get the optimum performance from out of R9 280X. Furthermore your PSU is not at all equipped to run R9 280X without ever failing.

Universally it is accepted that R9 270X the is best choice for i3 3220 so it will be also fine with your system too. You might be able to run 270X with your current PSU, but you have to be extremely calculative when selecting which rail you are going to use to power each of your system components, which I doubt you are capable of.

Which is why we start ranting when some one suggests R7 250X with i5.

how about 285 it uses less wattage something like 180-190W

Compared to R9 280X, R9 285 will be better suited for your PSU, but I still believe going over 270X migh result into waste of money as you may never get that extra performance out due to your CPU.

You have a really average system. You bought a not so good PSU. Why are you soo much interested into buying a GPU which might be inefficiently more powerful than rest of your system?

just like i said earlier elsewhere- mantle did really help reducing cpu bottlenecking issue by a huge margin. and according to microsoft dx12 can also do that... (though current gpus are not fully dx12 supported)

and i dont think i3 3rd gen will greatly bottleneck 280/760 in most games.... (but it will bottleneck, definitely).

you can upgrade your cpu+mobo+ram after 1 year 2 years (next gen coming soon)

and your psu should be good enough for 280 or 285, your system should not pull more than 320-420 when using 280

    - - - Updated - - -

if you can wait for 960... wait... but if you in a hurry to play AC and farcry just buy the gpu.

is your psu ancient tr2 xt? how old it is? its not bad... but i just dont like them much

i see you are new here, so don't open new threads for same topic, its annoying. i hope you dont open a thread named 960 discussion now

960 announce hoy nai, ei bosor release pabe naki ami jani na, rumor silo december e release pete pare.ekhon rumor holo early 2015 e release hobe. release pawar minimum 3 month pore asbe BD te.

also, i see psu experts of this forum like vanguard dont like tt tr2 series or smart m series at all.

so, if you can wait, 960 will have very low tdp, possibly around 150w, so you dont have to worry about psu. 960 er daam 23k-25k er ase pase hobe i guess
