• Doom 4 is real, rebooting the series and targeting next-generation

Bethesda has confirmed development of a "new version" of Doom 4, and apparently planned for the next-generation of consoles. The game is also set to reboot the franchise.

According to a source speaking with Kotaku claim the release date is up in the air after a reboot in late 2011. Bethesda expects the game to be as big as Skyrim which shipped 7 million copies on its first week.

    A Bethesda statement stated:
An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect," Bethesda's marketing boss Pete Hines said in a new statement.

"As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we're ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know."

Apparently, after Rage didn't meet sales expectations, Bethesda and id Software cancelled Rage 2 and all plans for Rage DLC. So now, all id staff are working on Doom 4.

Hopefully it'll be based on Unreal Engine 4.

Good news indeed. Hope it gets a more mature plot and good gameplay with horror elements

It will be based on id tech 5 or maybe id tech 6 engine as it is an ID software game published by Bethesda

It will never happen. Bethesda and EPIC are rivals. The same reason Call of Duty will never use Frostbite/Cry Engine.

As MDK said, it will use id Tech engine. Since id Tech already used in Rage, I think a newer version targeting for next-gen would be more reasonable.

Pretty sure if you want to use UE for Doom, you will have to walkover Carmack's dead body.

I don't have much faith in this, carmack has gone commercial over the years, all he thinks about it money, he was aggressively marketing rage but he failed to deliver the promises he made, I mean rage had good artstyle but technical graphics was horrible which was promised in the earlier stages of the game development, the gameplay was horrible and not to mention the ai was bugged as was the whole game.
